If you want a little theatricality in your political debates, you could do worse than invite Harley Brown, a perennial candidate for Idaho office given to "Harleyisms" that test the boundaries of good taste, not to mention bigotry.

Brown got a bit of national fame Wednesday night when he appeared with the other three Republican candidates for governor in his signature regalia. Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber may have his cowboy boots and big belt buckle, but Brown came on stage clad in leather, including fingerless gloves. He was missing a key front tooth and had a pair of cigars poking out of his shirt pocket.

Brown's appearance came courtesy of Gov. Butch Otter, who is running for re-election and didn't want to give too much of a platform to his chief rival, state Sen. Russ Fulcher. So Otter said he wouldn't show up unless Idaho Public Television invite all four candidates -- including Brown and another perennial candidate, Walt Bayes.

The station announced in advance that it would put the debate on a 30-second delay because of Brown's penchant for "cussing," as the moderator put it.

The tone of the debate was set on the first question when the candidates were asked about what they would do in the wake of a federal judge's ruling this week striking down Idaho's prohibition on same-sex marriage.

Otter and Fulcher both said they didn't want to discriminate against anybody but would fight to uphold the will of Idaho voters who approved the prohibition in 2006. Bayes, a great grandfather with a snowy white beard that extended down to his chest, answered by reading from the Bible. So far, no surprises.

Brown kept the audience guessing as he launched into his reply.

"Let me tell you about discrimination," he said, complaining about how the cops come down on bikers "like heat-seeking missiles" for no reason at all. Then he talked about driving a night cab for 20 years in Boise.

"I've picked up my fair share of the gay community and they have true love for one another," he said. "I'm telling you, they love each other more than I love my motorcycle. You know, they're just as American as a Medal of Honor winner...I'm glad that judge made that decision...I know I'm not really talking like a Republican."

Here's the full debate. The question about same-sex marriage comes at about the seven-minute mark. At the 19-minute mark, he defends his jokes taking on ethnic groups, gays and others.

Brown's comments about not discriminating against gays was actually pretty good. Anyways we all know the lemmings and drones (lock step party drones on both sides) prefer superficial suits whose first task when they reach Washington D.C. or a state's capital is to whore themselves out to the highest bidder.

I think he used to be a televangelist; same clothes too, with the addition of the white collar.

Now here's a perfect example of not judging a book by its cover. A older, white, Republican biker comes out with a solid defense of gay marriage. I give that I certainly would not have expected that.

Well said.

Nor would I. Sad that it takes a nut in a Republican gubernatorial debate to say that government should not have a veto if two competent adults wish to marry. That's about as big and powerful as a government can be.

Perfect explanation. Current Governor would have found it beneficial to include these folks at the expense of his biggest opponent.

If I lived up there, I'd vote for that guy. He seems like a straight shooter and tells it like it is.
