I would do this.

I also like the idea of using your last name.

You could do (example last name is smith)

Smith & Co. Construction
 
You might also want to consider having green in the name. Green is big these days, so is sustainable. In Berkeley you'd want to be Diverse Sustainable Green Construction, and have a picture of a transgender black guy hugging a *** on you'r truck. The hippies would stampede trying to get in your front door.
 
The reason we don't wanna go with a name is I'm going to have a partner and don't want to build a name only to have my partner get hit by a bus or whatnot.
 
Name it, Last Name's Construction (obviously last name is your last name). That way you can run it as a sole proprietorship using your SSN, rather than having to get a federal id #.
