A U.S. warship sank a pirate skiff and captured a pirate mother ship in the Indian Ocean on Thursday, according to a statement from U.S. Naval Forces Africa.

The frigate USS Nicholas came under fire from a pirate vessel shortly after midnight in international waters west of the Seychelles, according to a U.S. military statement.

The Nicholas returned fire and pursued the skiff as it fled, capturing it about 90 minutes later. Three suspected pirates aboard the skiff were taken into custody, along with two others aboard a suspected pirate mother ship that was nearby.

They should take that boat right to Mogadishu or wherever they are from, execute those pirates right on the deck of the ship for all to see, and toss their bodies overboard.

The ONLY problem I see with that is the possibility of retaliation when the pirates capture another ship...and they will.

Otherwise, I'd have zero problem with laying waste to all of Somalia. I'm just not sure the cost of the nukes would be justified...after all, Somalia doesn't have oil...or any other value.
 
or qat, iirc. and it's really not even that great a drug, from what i've read. god knows what they'd be doing if someone introduced them to meth.

the mental pictures of this attack made me giggle. they fire AK's wildly at a huge steel boat while someone methodly trains a 76mm gun on them, and *poof*. assuming they didn't use missiles. :awe:

If they can't even beat the French navy, what made them decide to take us on?

Bullets are cheaper. We have to be thrifty in these hard economic times you know.
 
It's a pity we lack the balls to deal with captured pirates properly. Hang them from the mizzen yard-arm! They're pirates from a country with no functioning government that were captured on the high seas. They do not have any rights which we are in any way obligated to respect.
 
They were just looking for a bed and three meals. They will now get room and board courtesy of the USN, that is until they are likely handed over to the Somalia government (if there is such a thing), when they will be released to do it all over again.
 
How desperate do they have to be? How hungry or impoverished can a society be to attack a warship with a skiff?

There's not much you can do to discourage a group of people that are willing to use their own women and children as human shields.

It's sad. They risk life just so they can be fed on a USS warship. That's the only logical explanation.

In pirate hunting mode you can probably throw in another 4 .50 cal's

And a dozen 240 G/B (.30 cal)
 
if they didn't even sink the skiff, i guess they must've stuck to small arms? hell, just the .50 cals would rip them apart.

edit- and M240's are .308/7.62, not .30. i don't think the latter has been used in quite a long time.
