You have to buy CS:S?

I use to play CS back in the day and still got it. I keep hearing how CS:S is suppose to look much better. I am a newb to CS:S does it come with HL2 when you buy it or can I install CS and update it or something?

I am betting you have to buy HL2 but not sure.

CS:S comes with HL2. You can't buy it on its own.

CS:S shares the Source engine with HL2 so you can't just upgrade to it from original CS either.

Only comes with HL2 currently. I wouldn't switch from regular CS if I didn't want to play HL2, though. CS:S ain't all that great, in some ways I still prefer the old CS gameplay.

crap

No way of testing it out before buying(demo or anything)? Was hoping you could just install CS and download a update or something. Does CS:S have anything new in it other than graphics?

What's wrong with the netcode? It runs fine for me.
I don't know about the hitboxes since I haven't play the original CS in years.
You can definitely shoot through walls. I've been killed several times because of it...

The netcode doesn't seem too bad. Maybe not as smooth as the old CS on most computers, but certainly not bad on my system and my connection.

The hitboxes complaint people have seems to me like a problem with the netcode. On my relatively fast computer and connection (Cable) I don't have any problems with hitboxes. However on my friend's similar computer with a crappier connection (Telus ADSL) I notice a lot of times when I can shoot someone straight in the head and they won't die, but die when I catch the wall beside them.

And for the walls, yes, shooting through walls is greatly reduced. It's one of those gameplay changes they made, and personally I like the old style better. Now, you can shoot through small thin weak objects just fine, but you won't get much shooting through a concrete wall.

Man I hope DoD ( Day of Defeat ) will come in a retial box by itself. I don't want to have to buy CS:S or HL 2 which I already on via the DVD edition to play it.

i have played both - I prefer the old cs format more. The graphics are great in CS:S - but the old format is more fun to play.

They've already proven the netcode in CS:S is crappy. You may not think it runs bad for you, but it does. It runs the same on every machine, and it runs crappy on every machine. It's the worst netcode I've ever dealt with.

I still play it 🙁

is valve trying to fix it?

?? Runs smooth for me. Maybe it ain't quite as fast but realize all the physics calculations and whatnot that now needs to be communicated. Hell I've played on 30 or 40 person games and it ran just as well surprisingly. I thought the old one choked when you got a lot of players.

Don't see how the netcode could be any worse than HL1 which had absolutely terrible netcode that pandered to HPBs. All you had to do was upload a file while playing and you became unstoppable in CS.

I love the new CS:S. They need to tweak out some stuff, add a variety of skins, and need to put the assasin maps back though.

People who think 1.6 is better than source have a point to argue, but I think in 3-8 months people will start forgetting about 1.6, kind of like what happened between Quake TF and TFC.

I have to asy anybody expecting a revolution will not find it here. The graphics are better, but they're nothign fabulous. They're still the same old environments, and CS on a good video card was not massively different.

Physics changed? Who cares; there's still very little going on besides bullets, guns, and people moving, so physics hardly come into play. I've not been overwhelmed with CS source.

People NEVER forgot about Quake TF, where did you get that rediculous idea.

Let me rephrase that, it will be phased out. I love Quake TF, in fact more than TFC, but how many Quake TF players are there compared to TFC?

Rumor says Valve plans to cut off 1.6 in the future and make a full transition to Source. Regardless of whether that's true, competitive play is going to be going to Source.

If they can make money I'm sure they will 🙂
