you have $25,000 to spend on a car

Including all "options" you can spend $25,000. What car would you get and what options would you get on it.

I was looking at a toyota pirus and it came out to around 25k which sounded like alot for what I was getting with that car. http://www.toyota.com/prius/

Used Honda S2000 is what I am eyeing at the moment. It's a beautiful car, but the COMPLETE opposite of the Prius. 😛 The S2000 is a lightweight, fun, high-revving, fast, convertible, beautiful roadster, while the Prius is practical, a camel, and much more comfortable. 😉 The S2K comes with no options.

what really attracted me to it was the 60mpg. It would save me over 1k a year. I dont know if that justifies the price on the thing though. I just thought for 25 you would get a bit more car.

Do I have unlimited space? A garage? If yes, I'd get a fleet of cheap cars that I think are cool and tinker with them all day long 😀.

88 - 89 Chrysler Conquest / Mitsubishi Starion
88 - 91 Honda Prelude 4WS
87 - 92 Trans Am GTA
87 - 91 Toyota Supra Turbo
88 - 92 Mazda RX7
85.5+ Porsche 944 Turbo
89 - 94 Eagle Talon TSI AWD
88 - 94? Dodge Daytona Iroc / Shelby

There's probably a few others slipping my mind at the moment, but you get the idea.

explain. I really dont know much about cars. I figured it would be a little less but not that much less.

Would this be my second car? If so, Evo. If primary, not sure, probably just something cheaper and save the rest of the cash.

Old EPA MPG was 60/51 city/hwy. New is 48/45 MPG

My parents have one, it's not really alot of car for the money. Not very fun at all, but of course, it's not supposed to be.
Those new numbers factor in these things now

Faster Speeds and Acceleration
Air Conditioner Use
Colder Outside Temperatures

I myself hardly use AC, which with an econobox is a pretty big hit on the milage. As for the faster speed I see that effecting highway driving, but City I think they just took old calculations and applied it across the board instead of really testing this car in the city.

Well seeing as it's summer time I'm sure the OP would need to use the A/C. Just get a cheap Civic if you don't want anything highclass. They get good gas mileage and are reliable.

I was having trouble with 60mpg for 25k, at 40mpg I dont think this will be happening any time soon. Its not all about gas mileage but that was a big selling point for me. I was even going to settle with how it looks for that.

60mpg was the old city rating. The new rating system rates the Prius at 48mpg city and 45mpg hwy. To what vehicle were you comparing the Prius when you calculated that you would save over 1k a year?

A Corolla, for example gets 28mpg city and 37mpg hwy under the new ratings. If you drove 15,000 miles per year all on the highway, and gas averaged $3.10 per gallon, the Prius would save you $224. If the 15,000 miles were city miles, the Prius would save you $692. You can build a really nice Corolla LE for $17,000. Even if you did somehow save $1,000 per year with the Prius, it would take 8 years of driving to make up the $8,000 price difference. I don't know how the Corolla compares to the Prius. I just mainly wanted to point out that you might be able to find a car as nice as the Prius for much less, thereby counteracting the gas savings you would get with the Prius. Or you might be able to find a nicer car for the same price as the Prius.

Nice comparison. Since the Corolla isn't in as high demand as the Prius you can probably negotiate a better deal than 17k.

Mazda 3 hatch...Grand Touring nicely equipped, comes in at ~$25k including sales taxes, destination, registration and fees

I have a 97 corolla right now and I love the thing. The only down side is the issue of power. When it takes you a min to hit 60 it kinda blows. I didnt even think to stick with a corolla.

My sisters first car was a 1991 Toyota Corolla for $5,000 cash a few years ago. Ok maybe it was 7 years ago, damn time flies. To this day it's still rock solid reliable and purrs like a kitten. It's SLOW, unexciting, cramped, and SLOW but it's reliable. If I were to buy an econobox I'd go with a Hyundai Elantra, Mazda 3 or Honda Civic. The Honda Civic is sweet but you'll pay $$$ for it.

Have you considered a Hyundai Elantra GLS for $15k?

25k would get you an almost perfect 60's continental. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the 60's continental convertible is my dream car.

03 cobra with 600rwhp, 93 civic hatch with a k20 swap and still have at least 10k left over, 90's nsx, C5 vette, I can name AT LEAST 10 more cars i would want.
