I've seen many "Drill Instructor" movies over the years...none were done 1/100th as well as FMJ and Lee Ermey.

It's funny watching these movies on TNT/USA/random local network station and hearing what words they substitute for the censored words. You just can't watch Scarface on regular TV. Pains me to watch it.

Love the movie too. It was actually my first rated R movie that I saw in a theater. Went with my dad... its a pretty fond memory for me.



 
I remember one of the first things they said when I stepped off the bus to enter basic training was "This isn't FMJ, but the drill instructor got one thing right, I will rip off your head...."

It is the most accurate depiction of the boot camp experience I have ever seen, at least as it was in the 1960's and 70's.

Yep. I had the priviledge of USMC Boot Camp in 1970 at MCRD San Diego. The few differences between the movie and real life are too small to mention...except that in the movie, they didn't show a single Black DI...and we had a couple.

I do but I agree that the second half just isn't memorable. There are a few good parts (I liked where the one guy is questioning Joker about having a peace sign right next to "Born To Kill"), but the second half is really just an average Vietnam flick. The first half is amazing though.
