You guys with slot load DVD drives.

I am going to buy a DVD drive. I was wondering how the slot load drives treat disks after a lot of use. I guess there are rollers or something inside that grabs the disk, do they leave any scratches or marks on the disks? What have you noticed after long periods of use?

Got you beat 😉,my old Pioneer 6x DVD drive is well over 2 years old now and is still going strong, no problems with it or the discs.
 
My Toshiba SD-M1502 is still going strong and treats the discs well after like 8 months. No problems with it as of yet
 
A long time ago in a galaxy far far away . . . . okay just a long time ago I had a Pioneer 5x slot loader. Never had problems with disc treatment but the novelty factor of the slot loading wore off pretty quickly. I ended up trading it off in a deal for a laptop. My current system is all tray loading . . .

Do you mean it is loud when it is spinning or just when the disk is being inserted or ejected? If it is load when spinning is it noticeable when watching dvd movies?

Mine isn't loud at all. In fact, I've never heard a slot drive being any louder at all than a tray drive. It just floors me when I hear people say how loud they are. I'd really like to hear a loud one to hear the difference, but I've yet to find one.
 
I have both a slot & a tray 16x pioneer and they are both fairly loud but I prefer the slot for frequent disk changing, faster and less handling problems.
 
yea, slot loading gives better disc handeling and because there is no conatct with the plastic liek the tray load, it will gives less scratch
 
Technically, slot load would be marginally louder than tray load but probably not noticeable since the motor spinning at 16X will be loud either ways. If you find a DVD rom spinning at 16X is too loud, you can always slow down the speed of the drive so you can hear more of that delicious 5.1 THX audio.

Trays don't scratch CDs because the tray only touches the edges of the CD where the data isn't stored.

A disadvantage of slot load is u can't take discs out easily when there's no power, while tray comes out if u stick a needle in the hole. (hehe reminds me of Deuce Bigalow "Ever stick a toothpick in a volcano?"

non-related... the other day My friend used a windows start up disc that had sand inside and I heard what sounded like sand paper. The disc was gone, luckily the floppy still works.
 
But how about the speed on pioneer 16x dvd and 40x cd slot load? I recently tested it with sisoft sandra (latest version) and it was only about 20x cd speed.
It's about 2 months old.
 
No ROLLERS. There is merely an arm mechanism that grips the disc by its edges and pulls it in and pushes it out. I took mine apart to cut a window in the top... Gotta see what's going on through the Plexiglass! Woot!

No Scratching unless you move the drive while it is spun up. Then you pretty much ruin your disc.... but I think that would happen with pretty much any drive.

I just tested a pc gamer cd... got 30x so I think it's only the cds that cause that bad speed.

My drive is noticbly loud when playing CD's/DVD's (the loading/unloading noise isn't an issue at all). Maybe it's because I'm coming from a 72x Kenwood CD-ROM (Silent 😉) that I'm kinda picky, but the noise is enough to be annoying when watching a movie. I'm considering a sound cover for the drive for when I want to watch movies.
 
I got my parents a Pioneer 105S, and it is unbelievably loud. I mean, 40dBA or more. It sounds like a portable air conditioner. When playing DivX movies, I have to literally stick a sock in it - I plug the hole with my foot.

However, my friend has a 105S or 106S, and it is of normal noisiness you would expect from any modern day CD-ROM or DVD-ROM. Let's face facts, any drive going full tilt will be loud. Cds and DVDs aren't played a full speed, so theoretically should be quieter. I dunno, maybe my parents' drive is flukey, but just so you know.

Scootin, you mentioned something about a sound cover - is this an actual product? You've piqued my interest.
 
I think slot loads are limited to full size cd's only. I don't think it has the capability to grab 3" cd's to load and unload them. Pioneer's website may mention capabilities to handling smaller cd's.

I've got a Pioneer slot load 16x drive. It's not too loud. Also I have it in an Antec 1030 case and with the door shut you can barely hear it.
