Back in the BBS days, if you were one of the cool people who uploaded great warez and had accounts on all the pirate boards in your area code, you would be called "elite". Anyone trying to be like you was a "lamer".

On IRC, elite got shortened to "leet", and later "l33t", and eventually "1337". Now just using the term automatically makes you lame.
