I couldn't find a post on this before but for those who don't know Mount & Blade is some RPG made by like one guy or something and it's still in development but you can download a trial now and play up to level 6. It doesn't really have a story or any interesting NPCs and the cities look really dull BUT the combat system is pretty amazing

you ride around on a horse and you can charge up to infantry and slice them as you ride by or thrust a lanc ein their fac eits so much fun. Then the archery system is really cool especially since you can fire arrows from your horse like a Mongol. For such a low budget game the combat blows away Oblivion and Gothic 3's flawed combat systems.

download the trial its a really small download

Cool, thanks for the heads up. Looks interesting... I'd like to play a Middle Ages-themed game. I'll check it out later after work.

Yeah you won't be disappointed - well maybe disappointed in how the cities look and the lack of content, but again, I have to reiterate just how awesome combat is! I simply can't believe such an amateur developer made such an amazing mounted combat system way beyond what modern multi million dollar budget games like Oblivion can do.

When you start out a new game do a few training excersizes where you fight against an opponent and then try some tournament matches. Dont wager any money- you wont lose anything by fighting tournament. Then leave town and run around looking for river pirates or other bandits and engage them- and this is where the beauty of the game is.

I downloaded the demo several months ago and bought the full version the same day. There are a few mods out for it that don't really change the gameplay but do add some style/content. You can find the mod site from their forums.

Just got done trying it out. I did the training matches then found a group of River Pirates to kill.

I have to agree, the combat system is pretty nice. The blocking and movement is amazingly well done for such a low (non-existent?) budget game. I read on the website that there's no healing potions... so there's no way to gain more health back? That kind of sucks. I barely have any money but if I join the tournament that should probably help. 😉

So far I think it's a neat game. If I end up liking it I may buy it, $18 ain't that bad for a game that's a refreshing change of pace.

yeah i havent figured out any way to heal onself once in battle, all you can do is retreat and then heal up on the overland map with time passing, heal faster with surgury skill- or was it first aid? if you click a skill i think it gives the description.

beyond the combat there really isnt anything. but the combat is just so funa nd addictive and surprisingly great graphics. the horses and armors look awesome- especially that dark plate armor.

Ah that's right, now that you mention it I do remember it saying you can pass time on the overland map.

It is pretty sparsely populated but the action makes up for it. I'd like to see what that guy could do with a some more resources behind him. I haven't done that type of game programming before but maybe I'll see if I can contribute something.

One question, what is the best way to earn more denars? Doing the tournament or just killing River Pirates and selling their items?

Man, I'm getting some horrible tearing and jumpiness here. It's bad while fighting, alright while just in town but the tearing is bad no matter what

I've been making a killing now hunting for bandits. Sea raiders seem to be especially lucrative. Start building up your own little army so you can take out big groups. Best is to attack a weaker enemy party which has good prisoners like crossbowmen or horsemen, because if you win the battle you get to recruit those guys for free. (just weekly maintenance but no up front charge like at inn).

Also prisoners can be sold for 20 denars a piece at the salt mine of Zendar(?) so you could rake up some good gold attacking the weaker river pirates and using blunt weapons so you knock them out instead of kill them

Yeah I haven't done much yet. I could see you can get a group together but I haven't done that yet. You have to talk to that guy in town to recruit right?

Haha taking prisoners... I suppose that bag of rocks I picked up will come in handy for that. 😉

yeah there's the guy in town (usually the tavern) who has soldiers for hire but the thing with them is they have a one-time hiring fee. Then that soldier has a weekly maintenance fee. If you were to find an enemy group which had the right kind of prisoners (not bandits/pirates/raiders, but soldiers like veterans, footmen, crossbowmen, etc..) then if you beat that group you can recruit those soldiers that were prisoners of thar group, without paying and recruitment fee. just the weekly maintenance which isn't much.

yeah taking prisoners is alot of fun 🙂 I have started using bludgeon weapons jsut os i knock enemies out and sell them to the guy at the salt mine. You need to have at least 1 skill pt spent on the prisoner skill though to start taking prisoners.

Couched lancing:

Equip a polearm/spear/lance whatever and once you get up to speed on your horse your character will automatically couch his lance. From there just aim and move, no clicking/button pressing necessary. If you aim this correctly it can do massive amounts of damage.
