I assume you need a PIN to use one.
I only recently got one at the start of COVID lock downs so if needed i could deposit my paycheck or get cash. I haven't used it yet.

One thing though, as someone recently laid-off they(PA) really push to use their issued debit card to receive your UC money. I would bet a lot of people just use the debit card for daily transactions.

Not really, unless you have some kind of peculiar card I'm unaware of. The ones I'm familiar with are processed by visa, and presumably mastercard, and can be used the same way online.

My bank, actually a credit union, has the option of receiving as SMS message for every debit or credit card transaction. I would be notified within seconds of them attempting to use that info.

It works well enough that I receive the SMS text while I am still standing at the register, or if I order online, I get the notice within a couple seconds of pressing the "purchase" button on the website.

Well, it sure sounds like the answer to OP's question is a resounding "no, we don't worry about that".
+1 for using a credit card... I think I use my debit card a couple times a year if it turns out I need cash and don't have some on me.

I use my AMEX for everything -- A+ fraud detection and alerting. I have it setup through Google Pay as well, and get notified of any charges as they come in.

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil.

I don't do delivery. Order and go pick up so I don't have to worry about it. Of course, I live in a town of about 5k and 1 traffic light so...

Well this sucks, speaking of stolen debit card I somehow managed to lose mine. No idea WTF it went. I just hope it does not end up in bad hands. I will cancel it and get a new one but I don't know if the number changes, I think it's your account number on there right? That can still be used for fraud.

Unless they do things differently in Canada (I doubt it), no, it's not your account number on your debit card, and yes, you will get a new number.

Went to my bank to cancel old card, looks like my bank uses a unique number per card and not the account number so that's good. They produced a card on the spot and gave me a new one. Only thing to watch out for if lost is tap, they CAN take money that way if someone tries to use it maliciously, and there is no way to get that money back. Up to a few hundred per transaction too. (raised due to covid-19, it used to be less before).

Still kind of annoyed that I lost the card though, really don't know how that happened.

Pretty sure my old bank did. Since I had lost the card I could not check at that point with current bank, but looking at the new card it's basically in the same format as a credit card, and I'm assuming the number on it is different than the last card. Either way I was a bit worried that someone that knows what they're doing might be able to do something with the number on it. There are some people who know a lot about this sort of thing and only need a tiny bit of information to go deeper.

No the cards come pre embossed/printed to the branch, they just tie your account to the card number.

Current bank is like that. Old one was not. If you lost your card they had to have one mailed out to you and it took a few weeks. This time though it was different, the card does not even have my name on it or anything.

That is just where it was processed. They used to have central printing facility. Still not your actual account number. Your cheque has that.

I worry that the employee I'm talking to has his phone on record and steals my debit card information.

The only time I was a victim of credit card fraud was at the hands of an employee at the business I made a purchase at. It is not going to happen to me again.

I would tell that company to update their website with a modern ordering/billing system and until they do I would pay cash.

WTF kind of banks are you people using? I've had the complete opposite experience with BOA. Between my wife and I, we've had our Debit Cards compromised 4 times over the years. Twice there were charges in excess of $1,000 in completely different states.

All we had to do was call BOA and reported the fraud charges and turn the card off. They had us look at all the current charges and tell them which ones were not ours. They refunded the money instantly, started an investigation and sent us new cards. All we had to do was electronically sign a letter saying it wasn't us. They concluded their investigation around 30-60 days and we never had to do anything else.
I have been with Bank of America since 2009. I purchased some cheap sneakers online. I guess because the purchase was from China my bank information was compromised three times from the same Travel membership program on the dark web. I called the bank and asked them if they monitored bank accounts. The third time they caught the transaction. It fell off. The first two times they did an investigation. They found it to be fraud. They credited my account. It does depend on what bank you have. All banks do not do this. Maybe they do not have the resources or pockets to do this.

So, I have to ask, i'm assuming you can't do anything with the card without a PIN number right? I mean I've been using debit cards my whole life, but unless you are at your bank with an ID, the card is useless without a PIN right?
Heck, I've been using debit card to pay online using authentication apps/machines for almost 15 years...
Not true. I've been to a gas station. I used my debit card with a pin and sometimes I sign with a signature. I even saw the attendant process my purchase as credit and hand me the receipt and let me go. No signature at all. Those are three different scenarios!

To sum it all up: You don't need a pin to use a debit card. Same thing for a Credit Card. You can sign in both instances. This is why a merchant should have good security i.e. cameras with good image capture. There is a chance a person using that card might use it somewhere else. Some thieves are pretty stupid! And people doing nefarious things online. All is not lost. It can be tracked to individuals. Internationally, I would admit is harder but, Some banks do try to find the culprits!

PNC monitors my debit card and has caught fraudulent transactions a few times. The card is automatically locked and I have to get a new card. A couple of those fraudulent charges got through for 90 bucks here 60 bucks there, but I was refunded immediately pending an investigation, which always backed me up.

With tap you don't need a pin, so yeah if someone steals/finds your card they can do transactions up to a few hundred. (I forget the amount, $250 I think?). I'm not sure if there is a daily max or if it just goes per transaction. Someone could easily go to like Home Depot or Walmart or something and just max it out on gift cards.

I guess cops can still track that by looking at the cameras at the store at time of transaction, but let's be real, police don't do anything for a few hundred bucks. Theft in my city has been escalating in past few months and now it's at a point where thieves are even stealing boats and trailers right off people's properties and even then nothing gets done.
