I mean..the same sh!t everyday. I've already got a powerful computer. My major is Computer Engineering. I don't know. After doing some case-mods, I won't have anything to do anymore accept build a more powerful computer...etc etc etc.
 
There isnt enough time in the day for all I want to do (especially when I have school, work and girlfriend cutting into my computer time!). I still need to finish my case mod, need to get my second box completed and setup so I can transfer my LPs, need to work on my own edit of Phantom Menace, mix a multitrack concert I have, and all sorts of gaming as well. Americas Army is out, Age of Mythology (beta tester!!), Unreal Tournament 2003 and Unreal II are all coming up as well

Edit: Linux will take some time to learn and pay off quite a bit.
 
I would say I feel your pain, but since I am also in college I have NO money to upgrade. I only get to upgrade 1.5 years. I used to want Computer Engr, but then decided to just do Electrical Engr now. I decided that Solid State Engr is interesting, and hope to work for Intel, AMD, or IBM. That way I can still work on computer stuff when I graduate, but if the market goes south I can always go to a military contractor and work on semiconductor there.
 
If I spend all day in front of one NOT doing anything productive (re: ATOT), then yes, I'll get tired of them and go run off and try to go accomplish something.
 
I am guessing that CompE is digital circuits, assembly, programming and stuff like that (if its the same as my school). Solid State is the actually engr of the chips. How electrons move in silicon and other semiconductors. How heat changes electron flow. What chemicals can etch the silicon and how to grow silicon oxide on the wafer and at what speeds. How MOSFET's work (transistors). Things like that.

Nah...well recently I had a slump where I didn't upgrade for about 18 months but I was still on the computer almost daily. I'm back in the upgrade mode unfortunately ($$$$$).
Also today I assembled a new computer, repaired another, and added some new hardware to my own...and here I am on the computer 😛 So I don't think I'm sick of it.

Just like people who get bored driving the same car to work every day would love to drive a Ferrari or something like that, Linux will be a change to start with, will give you a lot of control over the system, and will make you discover new things. As long as it stays new it will be interesting and therefor fun.

Personally I'd go with FreeBSD though 😉

i'm a compsci major.


when i started college, the internet was booming, people were throwing money around, and the future looked great. i overclocked my computer and modded and all was good. i could talk about frames per seconds and CAS timings for hours with ease.


the economy sours, and companies die. computer science classes seem to really drag on , and we dont do anything fun with software and i start learning crap about state machines, and i get to program nothing cool. every once in a while i get a project to do and i enjoy the accomplishment. rest of the time i just try to pass classes so i can graduate someday.

i'm graduating in a year. economy is crap, CS majors still get hired, but i dont know if i wanna do this all day. ack it was good as just a hobby...
 
Looks like the people like me who flunked out of CS, CE and such have it the best. We've been there, done that, but we don't do it every day, so its still new and entertaining to us 😀. Hell, I learn something new every day on AT(read: not ATOT heh), and when I am not treated like a total moron who doesnt know anything by the person teaching it to me, I have fun.
 
It's not so much the computers as all the fascinating stuff it brings me 😀
I'm signed up for like 40 ezines that I love 😛

That's the problem with "work" .. is that even if you enjoy doing it, when you have to do it for someone else's profit, it becomes labourous and tiresome. When you do it for your own profit (I'm not talking money here folks) .. it doesn't really get old.
 
No, I still love computers, even if I haven't upgraded in about a year. I work on a computer all day long, and when I get home I play games on a computer or a pseudo-computer (read: Playstation 2). I hope I don't get tired of them or my job will suck balls.

I have working on/with them since 1984 and I still love it for the most part. As long as you can continue to grow and advance in step with the technology it will not become boring.
