If this legislation comes into play, the surcharge will be as much as ?3.28 ($4.3) per gigabyte. This might put ?180 ($235) to the price of a top end iPod.
wtf $4.30 a gig. That's insane!

hold on, hold on.

What about a "tax" on mp3 devices and AT THE SAME TIME make OWNING (not re-distributing) ALL mp3 files legal ?

The point is that "we" already pay HIDDEN taxes for goods, eg. CDs etc. to cover the losses record companies have. (Or SAY they have). Same with movies.

Instead of going after the little people who download songs (or movies)..and HECK how many people owning ipods download songs, and SOME of them not always off the f****g itunes ???

Let them, let us pay "tax" or whatever you call it and finally let RIAA/MPIAA etc. shut up and people are able to download songs without being criminalized. That would be be honest and fair towards the industry, and also towards the consumer.

Think about it !

They put a tax on mp3 players in Canada, and a tax on cdr's. In return downloading MP3's are legal.

BUAHAHHAHA.....go in to BestBuy, Target, Walmart....and look at the prices....and then ASK some competent person what percentage of the price is added for reasons like covering damages of theft etc.....or what the price ACTUALLY consists of.

Difference is only that there noone TELLS you "YOU PAY 10% MORE on this because we have so much theft in our store"....you just PAY it and you you just dont know WHAT you actually pay.

If they come out and being honest and say there is a tax (a REASONABLE one) on say...mp3 players then you at least KNOW why you are paying and MAYBE it might even be for a good cause !

This is actually the first reasonable and fair action taken since it is virtually IMPOSSIBLE to do something against piracy - and it is ALSO dumb to criminalize 12 year old mp3 downloading teenagers.

Let mama pay them $100 more for their ipods....or if you earn money yourself just spend $100 "tax" more on your next electronic gadget....money going toward the record/movie industry etc. and the artists who (sometimes !) deserve it :)

i dont know but if this is true this is good.

EU or CA also put more tax on OTHER stuff...better healthcare, social security, better streets. better Internet :)

Too bad that some people HERE are very closed minded. The tax here obviously goes MOSTLY towards fighting and equipment in Iraq - or name me ONE thing HERE where you can see your tax money at work, and i mean reasonable used for for a use *everyone* could profit of.

Maybe CA and EU are WAYYY ahead in this...sorry to tell you that...

adding $235 to a $449 device is reasonable? having people pay extra when their music might be 100% legal is fair? are you smoking crack?

and if you think the artist sees a dime you're fooling yourself. this goes straight to sony's bottom line
