wtf $4.30 a gig. That's insane! If this legislation comes into play, the surcharge will be as much as ?3.28 ($4.3) per gigabyte. This might put ?180 ($235) to the price of a top end iPod.

hold on, hold on.
What about a "tax" on mp3 devices and AT THE SAME TIME make OWNING (not re-distributing) ALL mp3 files legal ?
The point is that "we" already pay HIDDEN taxes for goods, eg. CDs etc. to cover the losses record companies have. (Or SAY they have). Same with movies.
Instead of going after the little people who download songs (or movies)..and HECK how many people owning ipods download songs, and SOME of them not always off the f****g itunes ???
Let them, let us pay "tax" or whatever you call it and finally let RIAA/MPIAA etc. shut up and people are able to download songs without being criminalized. That would be be honest and fair towards the industry, and also towards the consumer.
Think about it !

This is actually the first reasonable and fair action taken since it is virtually IMPOSSIBLE to do something against piracy - and it is ALSO dumb to criminalize 12 year old mp3 downloading teenagers.
