we had a company happy hour on wednesday because we hit our feature freeze date at work and went out to celebrate on the company. so i am having a good time eating and drinking and i move to the outside part of where we are having our celebration. i go to a table that has like 4 other new people (we were all hired around september 04). one of the guys is like ...

"well drew i have to ask you this now because i have some alcohol in me and i'm curious. you do not seem like the typical computer science type guy at all. what made you want to get into computer science?"

i took the question kind of wierd and didn't know what to make of it, but I did answer his question and told him it was because when i was younger, i always wanted to make a video games because thats all i did. and as i got older, i found out there was decent $$$ in computer science so i went into it.

but i really didn't know what to think when i was told by a co-worker that i don't seem like a 'typical computer science guy.' i guess its cause i can actually get hot women j/k.

You were just stereotyped and discriminated against. Your feelings are hurt, and you cannot sleep. You should see a counselor immediately and report him to your boss. He should take 6 months of sensitivity training where he will be nurtured by the community. Are you or is he a minority? If so, it was because of that. There was probably racial discrimination involved and you should call Jesse Jackson. You should also consider suing the company and everyone who was standing in a 35-foot radius.

I was having lunch with some nerds the other day ... they were talking code, I was silent, then I piped up ... and one guy was like "whoa, you're a programmer?" ... guess he thought it was all over my head ...

lol yea i guess its cause i care how i look at times and that i actually take care of myself by working out, i'm pretty athletic and enjoy playing sports (although breaking my ankle playing basketball has made me think twice ), and also because I'm not scared to talk and joke around with people such as my managers.

yea thats kind of the way i took it, but then in my head i was thinking "i wonder if these guys talk crap about me when i'm not around because i'm not a computer geek looking guy, just a computer geek on the inside."

but even if they did, that would still amuse me .

I just went and checkout the Penn State CompSci faculty page. I had a professor Roger Christman who really portrait the stereotypical CompSci person and theres not a photo of him there.
But feel free to check out some of the others. Most of them have a photo, and look very comp sci.

I constatly get told that I don't look like a competer science guy: I work out, I play soccer and football competitively (I even was on soccer and football teams in High School). Furthermore, I'd fit under a description of metro-sexual. So yeah, I always get asked why I chose to become computer science guy.

My answer is always the same - I'm good at it and I enjoy doing it.

IT != Computer Science.

A lot of people don't understand the disctinctions. Some people think that if you're a Programmer, then you can "program" (install) Windows into their machine and that's what you do for a living.
