Grr...I'm Danish and not proud of it today.....our stupid country voted against the Euro tonight! It's incredible that there are still so many jerks (53.1% to be excact) in our country who feel that our country shouldn't benefit of the EU, and actually voted no on this thing.....I HATE you, no-voters, hear me? You're so conservative and ignorant it stinks!

heh, Denmark actually made 'Breaking News' on CNN today......quite an achievement.....now, let's hope that the demonstrants don't smash the inner city like they did some years ago on the 18th of May.....1993 I think it was.

GAH :(

Methinks you protest too much.
Look at the European Economy. I think the vote was right on, we shall see. Not my country but if we were to vote on a combined currency in this day and age, I would vote no. Maybe in the future.

There was a poll about this on some thread if you didnt see it.
You might want to take a look.

Yea, thank God the United States never approved a common currency. If we had, our economy would be in the garbage.

When I was visiting my relatives last year I asked them about this and almost all of them said they would vote NO. I'm not Danish but would have voted YES. The Danish currency has a fixed rate of exchange against the euro, and the Danes have no vote in what the ECB does. Voting yes it seems to me would gives the Danes more control over their currency.

The main reason my relatives said they would vote no was that they did not want to give up anymore control to Brussells. I think most of the NO voters did it out of a sense of nationalism.

I would expect interest rate in Denmark to go up some because of the vote and the euro to go down in value. It will now be interesting to see what Sweden and the UK will do in the upcoming years.

prodigy^, you were not suprised by the outcome were you? Do you think the government will force another election on this issue like they did with the Masterich treaty?

You're so conservative and ignorant it stinks!

Perhaps it's good sense? I know the baby aborting, drug snorting, rave-going Euro trash crowd seems widely in favor of whatever's today's most stupid fad, but I have a feeling that there must be quite a few people on the continent who still have their wits intact.

What's to be gained by adopting the Euro? Perhaps some convenience when traveling throughout Europe. Quite possibly some almost negligible trade benefits.

What's to be lost by adopting the Euro? How about national pride, dignity, etc.

Some economists proposed that Canada and Mexico ought to ditch their currencies and adopt the U.S. dollar instead, since they could effectively "cheat" inflation this way. But both nation's had enough self respect not to give the idea a second thought.

So cheer up buddy, it's all for the best. And don't go blaming conservatives (even Danish ones) :p

Typical. Human nature I guess. People are all for democracy when everybody else agrees with them.

Sounds like you're a sore loser, eh Prodigy?

"What's to be lost by adopting the Euro? How about national pride, dignity, etc"

aah yes, excactly what the no-voting parties here play on....national pride and that BS......listen, every coin is gonna have its own unique print on the back or front side (can't remember which), and seriously, who cares? not me, and it's not a reason to back out of such a great economical union.

:):) I'm so happy today. Now that the Danes voted no, the risk of Sweden voting yes is much less :D EU=Hitler's wet dreams come true

Just like England !
Danes want the advantages of Europe without paying any contribution...
Fortunately not all European countries behaved this way... :-(

Or maybe the Danes see the Euro tanking and the whole EU coming undone. Look how much value the Euro has lost vs the dollar.

"without paying any contribution.." that statement sure stinks. We pay a sh1tload more money to EU than we receive. I see that you're from Belgium, so I guess you're happy with the current situation. :(

prodigy- alright maybe that was a bit over the top, but the semidemocratic EU sure is striving towards geting a united states of Europe dominated by Germany and France. The buildup of an EU army and the nations letting go of the economic politic to the European central bank (=euro) are steps towards that. The problems that do need international attention (environmental problems etc) can surely be worked out in a forum like the EU, but they should butt out of interveneing in the nations sovereignity.

Oh, and another reason to be happy, Sweden beat Spain yesterday in handball, now we're in the final :D

Sorry Bakwetu, I probably overreacted...
But it's the basic principle of solidarity, richer countries have to pay more than poorer ones.
I'm sure the GNP per habitant is much higher In Danemark than in Portugal or Greece for example... Now Greeks and Portugueses are going to flame me ;)
Maybe I'm really pro-european because Belgium was one of the first countries to belong to the EU (one of the original six countries) and even before the EU we belonged to Benelux (Belgium-Netherlands-Luxemburg)...

3615, Maybe your in favor of the euro and the EU because many of the offices of the EU are based in your country. Because of this you reap a financial gains other countries do not. Of course I'm an American so what do I know about EU politics.

Well, having all EU building in Brussels is not a good thing AT ALL, it makes a hell of a lot of traffic...

The NATO buildings are outside Brussels, they chose a good place.
The SHAPE buildings are outside Mons, they chose a good place too.
The EU building are just in the centre, it sucks !!!

And don't imagine I'm pro European because I'm working at the European Commission... even if I am... but for an external company... not with an European Commission wage :(

Sure I agree on solidarity towards poor countries, but there are countries outside EU in much more need for aid than Spain, Portugal, Ireland and Greece. Personally I don't have any more/less sentiments for Europeans than I have for Africans or people from some other countries (excluding my fellow nordic countrymen :)). How come the thought of solidarity suddenly becomes obsolete when they discuss the eastern European countries joining?

This isnt at all surprising, Europe can't agree on anything ever so its not surprising they cant even have a common currency. It took America to come in and organize Europe to deal with the Yugoslav problem, maybe we should do the same with the currency, and just let all of you use the dollar?

Kind of funny that the countries in Europe now that are benefitting from the European Union are the countries which are willing to unite with other countries economically and work with others well : Ireland, Spain, Italy.

Maybe its justice that isolationist, patriarchial countries are going to end up getting screwed in this whole thing.

Its funny to read the English papers and see how jealous they are of Irelands success in the European Union, they never once give Ireland credit for being able to work well with others, they accusse them of cheating, living in a bubble economy, etc, etc. Never once admitting the fact that probably the reason Ireland fared so poorly for so long was that they were forced to live under the British economic regime.

What goes around comes around I guess.

Huh? Orbius that is some really weird reasoning. It is exactly those countries that do get paid from the EU (Portugal, Ireland etc) that doesn't want to include the eastern European countries, because that would mean that the cashflow would be directed to those new countries. Naturally they are very happy with things as they are right now.

thebestMAX: I asked non-europeans not to come forward with too many smart ideas because many of them (especially Americans) have a totally different point of view on things like independance and such stuff

Well if the Danish currency is fixed to the Euro (sure that's not a female sheep?), then it doesnt really make any difference whether they go with the Euro or not.

Other than inter-Europe financial transactions that start or end in Denmark would require less paper work if they went with the Euro.
