Like buying a 6870 to upgrade your 5870 😀

Well I suppose 6870=5870 but 460SE<gtx460, but yeah AMD's naming there is a bit lame.

I don't really see this as being an issue either way really. We always used to have SE cards, and a bunch of others ... way, way too many others.

It'll be a bit of a shame to go back to the days of 5 or 6 different versions of essentially the same card.

When they get cheap enough, the gtx 460se, might be a good card for someone.
Its got less cores than both the 1gb and 768 card.
But unlike the 768 model retains 32 rops VS 24 and keeps the 256 memory interface VS 192

Graphics card version
GTX 460 1GB GDDR5GTX 460 768MB GDDR5GTX 460 SE
CUDA Cores336....................336.................288
Graphics Clock (MHz)675 MHz........675 MHz.........650 MHz
Texture Fill Rate (billion/sec)37.8..... 37.8............ 31.2

what card is the 460 SE fighting? the 5770? in terms of performance?

*goes to look for a review of the 460 se*

****edit after looking quickly at techpowerup review,
Seems to be really close in overall performance to a 5830.

cheapest 460 SE I could find on newegg? 139$ USD
cheapest 5830 I could find on newegg? 139$ USD

cost same, perform within a few %s of each other.. either one for its price is probably a good buy.

These cards are not bad at all overclocked. 23.4% gain at TechPowerUp. At the right price these cards could be sleepers.

Crossfire and SLI change the game up abit.

By no means is buying 2 cheaper cards and going SLI/Xfire a bad idea, and then OC'ing them. You get ALOT of bang for the buck that way, hell even 2x 5770's is good, usually faster than a 5870 by a bit.. and those are around the 100$ mark, giveing you better than 5870 performance for 200$.

The same would probably be true for 2x 460 SE's, SLI + OCed I bet they offer great bang for the buck.

It hits near the same #'s , but comes even lower 'stock' clocked. 650mhz.
These are 199.99 at Best Buy, usually on sale.
House Brand.
Vs
299.99 for the 1gb

460SE is a great card if you OC it. Hardware Canucks reviewed it a few weeks back.

460SE at 851MHz pretty much match the performance of a 5850/6850 in DX11 performance which is a great deal for a cheap card. However, a GTX 460 1GB can also be OC as well. But, I imagine the SE would spank the GTX when compare price/performance (SLI 460SE would be about the same price as a factory OC GTX 460 1GB).

I dont see fail at all. just a wee bit expensive. now if it was closer to $100~$110 range, it would be EPIC WIN. due to memory and o/c possibility.

and if someone figures out how to unlock those shaders... 😉

I think the 6850's in crossfire and both OCed with abit of volt increase to push it over 1,000 mark... is great fps/$ 🙂

but even slower cards... like say a 460 SE in SLI and OCed, would be awesum fps/$ too. Theyd probably make a 580 look like bad fps/$,

450 SLI + OCed is almost as fast as a 5870:
You can get that for 199$ or less.

6850 in crossfire @ stock speeds = 5970+ or better than 580 performance.
OC these and watch them go faster than a 580 or 5970.

180$ x 2 = 360$ 🙂

The 6800 is not relevant to this topic, at all. Red herring tactic at its finest. And I don't think nyker was countering the red herring.

I was simply saying that Nvidia is not being any sneakier than AMD with their naming now or in the past, both companies have gone through some very retarted naming systems that do nothing but confuse customers. I didnt even bring it up in the first place.

the 5830 is known as a terrible price/$ card though.

And I was saying nyker, by calling nvidia sneaky, wasn't trying to counter Wreckage at all. He looks like he's just posting an observation, and the topic of this thread is about the GTX 460 SE. It is not about the 6800 or AMD, hence why Wreckage used a red herring. What does it matter if Nvidia is sneakier or not than AMD? It doesn't. Personally I think the 460 SE product name is retarded, and possibly sneaky; they could have called it the 455 as I doubt they have plans to ever release a 455. But the fact is we now have three cards all with the GTX 460 moniker and they all perform differently.
