you call and cancel a CC but they don't cancel it

i found out a month ago that a card i cancelled a year ago wasn't cancelled (got an email that a new statement was issued - yearly fee which is why i cancelled it in the first place). so i called and cancelled it and they said they'd remove the fee since i tried to cancel it a year ago. i just got another statement balance for $89! apparently there was a late fee added WTF? so i called and got it cancelled again and they said the balance would be $0.

it'll probably show up late on my credit report now 🙁 never missed a payment in my life blah

i ask for a confirmation letter to be mailed to my house after a cancellation. call them back and ask for the same if you think this is going to be an ongoing problem.
