Strict naming schemes are stupid. I recalled some of the following:

I remember at a company we had
First initial then first 4 chars of last name:
Sara Crewnoble became screw@

He needs to get his panties out of a wad and lighten up. If he signs his emails as Kevin Chin at the bottom, anyone with half a brain would understand his e-mail address. As crappy as corporate America tends to be, I can't even imagine my job without SOME sort of organization. If he changes it, then everyone else will wanna, and there's just gonna be a big, confusing mess all cause some guy is insecure about his nationality or something.

I agree with this solution. why in the world would your IT dept come up with a dumb nameing convention like that. This is why the new standard is firstname.lastname@company.com Lots less confusion and clear as a bell.

I really think somebody in your company should revisit the idea and change it.

policy is a policy, I say stick with it, most people in the professional world won't have a problem with it, nor will it be taken as a slur, its his name.

tho a better policy would have been to do lastname.first initial, whats done is done. so it would be chin.k@company.com

it has nothing to do with insecurity. it's about a stupid rule turning the guy's email address into derogatory slang. yes most people will understand the situation eventually but they will also look at the address and go "wtf"

if you are black and your name is Andre Nigg then your email address would be offending to you also. I believe so and the solution is to just give him a different email address that he prefers. By your logic, Kevin fuc, Tony Shi, andre nigg, Yvonne Puss, Tina Cun are all valid email addresses. So why dont you just back off and think for a minute.
