Perhaps "consciously" would have been a better word.

This is probably why it's not a good idea to tell someone you're going to measure their respiratory rate before you actually go and do it. :)

you may think you're controlling your breathing... but unless you are manually sending "retract" ... "expand" ... commands to your diaphragm... it's still autonomic.
