yo Elledan, or anyone who knows Malmsteen's work...

I was wondering if he has put out any CDs of him with an orchestra? I have heard a few random MP3s, and just picked up the Malmsteen collection, and I like his work with the orchestras a lot, but can not find any such CDs...

So has he had any or not? 🙂

I think he did a collaborative effort a couple years ago with Stevie Wonder and Meatloaf. I forget what the album is called but the cover is a picture of Yngwie and Meatloaf giving Stevie an enema. It doesn't have any orchestral pieces, but its a good album in its own right.

Elledan isn't the only one who loves Yngwie here! He put out an album called "Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in E Flat Minor, Opus 1 - Millenium," which was basically a purely classical album that had electric guitar as the lead instrument. Man, what a great title! It was recorded with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. I absolutely love the album. I don't think you should have that hard of a time finding it, it's not out of print or imported or anything. There were two releases, one for the classical market and one for the pop market. Not sure what the actual differences are, tho.

no offense, but malmsteen is kind of a jackass. if you want metal/orchestra stuff listen to Therion's "Vovin" then "Deggial". If you like Wagner's music listen to their most recent "Secret of the Runes". Other good stuff would be Virgin Steele's "Invictus" and even Blind Guardian's newest "A night at the opera" which should be at Best Buy today. (Also check out Nightwish's second and third album for great female vocals + keybaord/metal riffs)

Finally if you want something truly unique in blending orchestra in metal (dominated by classical) check out Devil Doll's "The Girl Who Was...Death" (based on The Prisoner) or "The Sacriledge of Fatal Arms"...each are only about 12 dollars with free shipping at "The End Records"

Just some advice from a classical/metal-head (though I'm listening to a bit more prog and pure classical nowadays)

Therion rox 🙂

Btw, if you're more into classical music nowadays, try downloading a few Within Temptation mp3s. Especially the songs from the CD Enter are a very nice combination of metal and classical music.

Sorry, but I've never heard of Malmsteen 😱

No offence, but Within Temptation is reasonable at best. A much, much better choice would be Nightwish, especially the second album 'Oceanborn', 'Wishmaster' is quite good as well, but of a lesser quality, IMHO.

BTW, you can't beat something like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Requiem, K.626 - IV. Offertorium Nr, or Carl Orff's Carmina Burana - O Fortuna 🙂

heheh....what about Orff's O Fortuna....done by Therion?!?!? I saw a bit of Crmina Burana on 'the arts' channel and the stage stuff was really screwed up (people in animal and skeleton suits, fog on the ground, and some sort of ritual)...but I do agree that Oceanborn is a bit better than Wishmaster, but both sound very very similar to one another. hopefully their next album will show a new progression towards something (like Therion usually does and Amorphis seems to have stopped doing).

I prefer the original version of O Fortuna 🙂

But yes, I too hope that Nightwish will make some changes, a bit more Opera, perhaps 🙂

No offense Autolycus, but Malmsteen IS classical metal. It could be argued that other bands actually started it, but he is the epitomy of it. Sure he's an arrogant a-hole, but I don't care, I enjoy his style of music.

As for good operatic metal with the best female vocalist I've heard in a "pop" band, check out After Forever.

I took your advice and downloaded a number of songs of After Forever.

Not bad, but IMHO, The Sins of My Beloved is a bit better.

Of course, Doom Metal like that of Tristania can not be beaten 😉

'Beyond the Veil' is awesome (and what's amazing too is that Best Buy will actually carry it, but blocks out the cover with wrapping). Although I've heard their newest album wasn't that good.....any confirmation on this?

I will have to sample some of this Sins band. After Forever, like all good bands, took a few listens for me to really appreciate it. Give it a few more listens, who knows?

I'm sorry, I can't liston to anything by Malmsteen without rolling on the floor laughing till it hurts. That guy is SOOOOO full of himself. I bought an album sheerly for the joke factor. Also, he's a pansy. When I want to listen to quality muscianship in a rock guitarist (and being a good musican is different than being a good player), I listen to Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and of course BB King.

Which album? I think I haven't heard it yet.

I've already put the songs I downloaded in my playlist, so I'll certainly listen to them once in a while (at random, how many times is one song played in a playlist of 1400+ songs? 😉 ).

See, that's the thing. Yngwie IS a joke. But when you make fun of something for long enough, you can't help but start liking it. I guess that's what happened to me, I mean he sings songs about Viking warriors for christ sake! That's just hilarious. But I do appreciate his style of soloing.
