Got a new case yesterday, went about transferring all my internal equipment to the new case. Boot up, find that the existing install of Win2k doesn't boot up correctly... freezes up after the Win2k splash screen, the screenshot is solid bars on various colors, etc. So I wipe my hard drive (after various issues with an apparently POS floppy drive), attempt to reinstall Win2k... get all the way through the setup, starts to load the actual graphics-based installation screen (where it's reading from the CD, not just the floppy disks)... same thing.

So... it's probably one of three things. The RAM, the video card, or the power supply. Given that the PSU is brand new, I'd like to hope it's not that. I'm about to go test the RAM now with a low level mem. tester.

That leaves (hopefully) the video card... anyone have any advice?

There haven't been any errors from the PSU yet... everything's booted up okay... just when it gets to the splash screen.

Nevermind, apparently it was a combination of the video card and a bad floppy drive.

Ahh the wonderful world of computers

Well, apparently it's still not completely fixed.

Now I'm at school... mobo won't start. It's an Epox 8k7a, with a 1.4 Ghz Athlon. The onboard LED either shows a 00 or an FF... tried resetting the BIOS, didn't fix it. There's no heat coming from the CPU.

So, at this point, it's either the motherboard or the processor. I'm stymied as to which.

Or the power supply. But that wasn't giving me any problems before... plus the friggin thing is brand new.

Doesn't even POST. Just sits there.

I'm guessing it's either a dead CPU or a dead PSU now...?

No,.

Seems to be having issues with the parallel port now... gah.

Gonna reinstall 2k tonight, see if it's stable.

*holds nose* Wow, the power supply is completely gone... reeks of acrid smoke. Yikes.

Gonna buy a new PSU from Newegg... wondering if I should even bother with a new mobo and CPU.
