yikes, how much do box tickets to concerts cost?

A thank you concert t-shirt, or should I get knee pads.

A friend of mine invited me and my wife to a concert, Depeche Mode and Peter Bjorn and John at Madison Sq. Garden. We happily accepted and planned on buying her a t-shirt, dinner, and some drinks to make up for it.

She then texts my wife (who asked about dinner plans) "Don't worry about dinner -we're in a private box so dinner will be provided, come hungry!"

Umm.. What are we talking about price wise? Hundreds of dollars or thousands?

I really don't know, but it sounds like $200+ for the tickets.

Regular floor tickets are $149, but I'm guessing a private room plus unlimited food/drinks/waiter service is probably marketed up to an insane level

Oh, ok. I bet $800+ then. I don't go to too many big concerts anymore, so I'm a little out of touch. Being in NY really jacks up the rates also :^/

For Depeche freaking Mode? WTFBBQ! They think they're Paul McCartney or the Eagles or something? Even the Elton John/Billy Joel tickets weren't that much here.

Don't quote me on it, but based on what I can gather from the internet and information I got from my roommate (his best friend's family had access to an MSG box when he was younger) the boxes cost a small fortune just for it to be "yours". The boxes generally get taken by companies for use by their employees and clients. You still have to pay an additional fee per event and at least in some venues you have to pay for prepared food. I know that at Prudential in Newark you have a variety of options for food which can vary in price.

Without getting into detail about your friend, the box is probably paid for by someone other than them. Either way, its really expensive, definitely more $ than its worth so its probably hard to make it up without feeling like you're getting ripped off (although for Depeche Mode, especially considering how great their last two albums were, maybe it is worthwhile).

FWIW, a website I found quotes $160,000 as the per year cost for a box and I was once told that the events ran around $500 per to get access. Those numbers could be WAY off and particularly with regard to the "per event" price, that is likely a very dated figure.

Woaw...

OK, we'll invite her out to dinner, a show, and i'll get the knee pads ready...

I think at (Angel's stadium at least) people/corporations have to buy the room, not the tickets. You pay for the room for one year at some price, and you get the room and stuff for all events at the venue.

One time I went with a friend and wondered the same thing, but he told me his company gave him the tickets cause it cost them nothing (they weren't entertaining a prospective client that night so they gave the tickets away to their empoyees).

I think this is true. You pay an annual fee for the box itself then additional costs for each event.

Unless these friends are uber loaded, they probably scored these tickets from work or something.

Tickets range from $49 to $149, I used the $149 as a comparison for the highest level available through ticketmaster.

Though concerts are routinely absurdly expensive here - I often consider taking time off and traveling to Canada to catch an act on tour... But that's stupid so I just pay the premium 🙂

Maybe I'm a cheap ass, but if somebody invites me to a concert I assume it's paid for and they don't expect me to buy the tickets off of them. If they wanted me to pay they would ask if I wanted to split the cost for a concert.

In return, the next time I got tickets to something or dinner plans I would offer to treat them.

Yeah, no doubt. Whenever someone invites me to a ticketed event, part of the very first invite either includes a price or it doesn't. If it doesn't, then tickets are free. Repay the favor at a future event.

Oh, I'm talking about for karma's sake.

She doesn't expect anything from us and her dad gave her access to the box, but she picked the two of us over everyone else, so I'd like to say thanks in some way.

But, yeah, for sure -I'll pick up extra tickets to an event in the future, or be a good host the next time we hang out.
