Why can't he change his mind? He has apparently done so in regards to his policy towards Iraq. Of course admit that and you wouldn't be able to go off on some rant about him. I guess the Supreme Court and the last President weren't capable of having a change of heart or clarity of perspective on this issue either.
You know that's not what Bush is doing, Dave. His position has not changed he just knows the national soundbite of executing the MR doesn't fly. When I hear someone ask, "Mr. President do you regret encouraging the TX legislature to kill bills intended to ban the execution of the MR?" . . . and he responds,
"yes, I made a mistake." I will retract every less than flattering comment I've made about Bush in the last . . . 5 minutes.
But his likely response,
"ya see I was gubnor and I don't write the laws. I just sign whut ever the lege passes as long as I think it's good for Texas. If a good bill had come to my desk, I wud have signed it."
"But Mr. President during your tenure as governor and during Campaign 2000 you said you were against any restriction on executing the MR."
Exactly so my position hasn't changed I . . . I mean . . . well, if they are convicted of the crime they couldn't be retarded because we don't convict retarded people or anyone else that doesn't understand the nature of their crime. So anyone convicted is not retarded. So I've always been against executing the retarded."
Bush has changed his mind about Iraq? Another wager if Bush doesn't utter a single word or imply we are planning military action against Iraq for the next month I will write a sonnet entitled "Bush the Reformer with Results" or "W: 21st Century Statesman for World Peace". I think a more likely scenario is that Bush wants to downplay Iraq Invasion in the Immediate Future b/c of the lack of support at home and abroad. His keepers say keep the rhetoric down to placate the naysayers and allow Rummie, Wolfie, and the barking dogs in Congress (otherwise known as Clan of the ChickenHawks) to keep the drum beat going. Bush is not a very good or bright politician but he can at least read. He's following a script just like the Office of Homeland Defense (which made little sense) morphed into the Department of Homeland Defense (which according to Bushies was W's plan all along). So yes, I am implying the PUSA is perpetrating a naughty tale marginally related to truth.
Please don't bring Clinton into this discussion. I'm still trying to forget the man and somebody just has to mention his name and ruin my afternoon. Umm, the lack of moral clarity in Clinton, the current Supreme Court, and GWB's administration is no more shocking than the blatant political nature of all three beasts.
