Yet another upgrade thread

So it looks like there's a decent chance my video card has died on me. It's an old GeForce 8800GTS, and I'm trying to figure out what kind of card my computer could take advantage of before it gets bottlenecked by the the CPU (it's an E6750). A quick peek at the Toms' Hardware best graphics cards for the money article is making me think Radeon 6770, or a 6790 if the price is right. Thoughts? Also, what's the power consumption like for a 6770 compared to a GeForce 8800?

The gtx460 will consume more power than a 8800gts (about 50 watts) and the gts450 will use about 6 more watts than a 8800gts.

The gtx460 is 3x faster and the gts450 is 2x faster than a 8800gts320, roughly.

What psu are you running?

Make sure on gtx 460 that you get the 1gb model. They also offer a 768 mb version and a 1gb SE model, both of those are significantly slower.

Yes, a 8800gts320mb is about 9600gt speed.
A gts450 is faster than a 8800gtx which is 2x faster than a 9600gt.
It might be 1.9x faster, but you get the idea.

Ok, I did a little googling and it looks like the 450 is significantly faster than the 8800GT, which in turn is faster than the GTS. I don't want to spend too much $$ on a 4-year old PC, and the 450 sounds like it'll provide a nice and very affordable performance boost.

Yeah google baking video cards for the lulz, fun project to mess with. No guarantees of course.

But yeah GTS450 is decent.

Honestly a 6850 or 460 would be better long term (more usable after you upgrade your CPU/mobo/etc), and would probably work fine on the PSU you have.

One a related note, is it a problem that I can't currently boot up my PC? I know normally you're supposed to uninstall drivers, swap out cards and then install new ones when you go from nNvidia to AMD, but right now my computer is unusable.

You might be buying more than just a gpu... a bad psu could take out everything. I'd do some troubleshooting to definitively isolate the problem before you start replacing things willy-nilly. You might find that, with current low prices + black friday coming up, it makes more sense for a complete system overhaul now.
