I have had this setup going on 3 years now. I still read a little about the new stuff but I'm not up on it like I used to be.

These are my relevent components.

Abit IC7-G (I use the onboard sound, digital out is important)
P3 3.0ghz
2x 512mb Corsair XMS 3500
9800pro
Antec 480 True Blue power supply.
4 hard drives & 1 cdrom. 1 drive is sata the rest are ide. All my future drives will be sata.

I would like to only upgrade the mobo, cpu & video. Will my power supply & ram work with current amd motherboards?

Whats important to me:

Stability
Speed
Dual Core (must have)
.
.
.
.
Overclocking

What I have in mind is maybe a AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester, ASUS A8N-SLI Premium & a 7800gt video card.

Would you guys recommend a video card and let me know if the mobo & cpu are good choices??

Thanks a lot!!

yeah that ram should be fine. although i don't see the point of the sli mobo but thats up to you. cpu and gpu look good.
that psu will run you but with it already being 3 tears old, a $50 fortron 400 or 450 wouldn't be a poor investment

Besides gaming, you think I will notice a speed boost?? I have yet to use a new amd system.

Yeah, that PSU should be sufficient. I have a similar setup with the TP2 480 and it works fine.

Depends what you do with your computer, internet will be unchanged, but i went from a XP 2500 to a 4400X2 and my transcoding times in DVD shrink went from around 200 mins to 40 mins.

The PSU should be enough, but as it's getting old it may no longer be performing to spec. I don't know if it's worth swapping it out for another one is worth it. Pass.

I play games sometimes but I use Autocad and other solid modeling apps a lot. No, I dont need a Quadro ;) I would love one but its not in the budget.

The main reason I'm ugrading is for the video card. My 9800pro isnt cutting it anymore. I expect a HUGE increase in game performance but I'm just hoping everything else stays as fast or gets better.

For solid modeling you're talking very heavy CPU useage (aren't you?) where the 3800X2 will shine. Probably would gain from 2gb of RAM if you can get it in the future.

I dont work with huge assemblies so my memory usage isnt crazy. My current setup is fine for work but I was about to drop $300 on a 7800gs then thought about how crazy that is.

You should be happy with the board and CPU you picked, for a much cheaper alternative to the 7800GT and still make for a very effective graphics upgrade, X850XT for $160 after MIR would be a good choice. A 6800GS and overclock is another good value@similar pricing.

Judging by this, http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2616&p=7 , I would rather get the 7800gt.

I was thinking about getting an agp x850 but I think its time for a big video upgrade.

Price isnt too much of an issue. Im not loaded but my work will buy it for me and let me pay what ever I want in weekly payments. :)
