Long Version:

I'm staying at a hotel that I frequent a lot (I'm in their "platinum" program versus regular). Their nightly rate was quite high when I tried to extend my stay two days, but the guy at the front desk "offered" 50% off for both nights... I was quite surprised, as I have *never* seen a rate that low, and they were mostly sold out. Overall I saved about $150 across the two nights ($75 per night in savings), but I also knew I was going to pay for parking/resort fee and extra car. I tipped him $7 as a thank you. Was that too little or ok? He seemed appreciative and even gave me his card.

Short Version:

Guy saves me $150, I tip $7. Too little or ok?

Why $7? Makes it look like you're extremely persnickety about tipping, like the kind of guy that whips out his HP-49 whenever the bill is ready. Should have rounded to the nearest five.

You tipped the guy at the front desk? WTF??? I swear, I don't get why some of you people tip who you tip and not others that are more deserving.

I only tip if a service was completed like valet, front desk guy isn't one of them.

Maybe, b/c the guy hooked him and he's a frequent customer.

Matt, was that only you had? I would have probably given him a $10 or $20. Next time you book there, ask for the him, hopefully he hook you up again and again and again. And continue to grease him.

$7? What did you do? Dump all the change in your pockets on the counter and pushed it over to him? If you're going to tip him for saving you $150 then the least you could have done was given him a ten or twenty.

Saving someone $150 sounds like a service to me.

Which was apparently below the rate he was getting before even with the rewards program, and the place was pretty booked, so yeah, I'd say the guy warranted a tip.

I would've slipped him at least $20, possibly even given him the difference between the rate you were getting before the extension and what you're paying after he got you the discount or $50, which ever is lower. You still save $100 (assuming you were going to stay even at the increased extension rate).
