If only there was a current thread about Israel on this forum I could have posted in. :awe:

Anyway, watched Colbert tonight and he had the Israeli ambassador on and the guy looked like he just came from a round of tennis with his fellow Wasps at the country club, don't 'ya know, and spoke impeccable English.

It put me in mind of one of my boyhood heroes, Abba Eban. Back in a time when Israel's very existence was in immediate and dire peril in a way it isn't quite today, and long before the sad irony of Israel as the occupier and strict subjugator of a captive and restive civilian enemy population had come to pass, Abba Eban stood before the world as the incredibly eloquent and unbelievably well spoken advocate (Israeli ambassador to the UN from 1948 on, starting at the age of 31, concurrent Israeli ambassador to the all important US, later Israeli defense minister et al) for the embattled State of Israel.

For me, and perhaps many other Americans, he was immeasurably helped by his fantastic command of Oxford British English, which automatically raises a person's perceived IQ by about 30 points in my eyes, lol.

Compare him to, say, Yassir Arafat trying to communicate in English and it was never a fair fight! D:

Over his long and distinguished career, Abba Eban did as much for his country as almost any other man has ever done for theirs.

I can still feel a tingle hearing that great and eloquent man talk.

Nonsense. Zionist propaganda totally rules the airwaves in the US in particular. I am totally outside the conflict in Palestine in terms of my ethnic background and religious beliefs, but it is obvious that the way AIPAC, the NYT, WaPo, CNN, Fox etc run things is totally pro-zionist. The world is just tired of all the bs coming out of Israel and all the "anti-semitic" nonsense rethoric against anyone criticizing zionism policies. Israel is doing itself no favours behaving this way. They are creating a self fulfilling profecy by all this landgrabbing and slaughter based on ethnicity. To be the aggressor and claim self defense in all actions is beyond ridiculous and frankly I am seeing more and more people getting seriously upset by Israels actions.

CNN zionist??? have you not heard of Christiane Amanpour? she basically stood next to a hamas militant while he was launching a Grad missile into Israel and reported about the "ruthless killing by Israel" during Cast Lead.

Very moving to listen to.

It is the Law of Humanity that if you do not suffer the pain inflicted on you but allow it to harden your ego, you will one day inflict that pain on others. Pain creates saints or monsters depending on what one will feel. We can die from our grief and rise or we can become towering castles of war and of rage.

Who the hell is "oren"
and why are you mentioning him here?

IF you're talking about Abba Eban, calling him "MORE of an academic and historian than a diplomat" is hogwash.

He was ALSO an academic and historian, which he turned to full time AFTER a 41 YEAR LONG CAREER AS A POLITICIAN AND PERHAPS THE MOST FAMOUS AND CRUCIAL ISRAELI DIPLOMAT OF ALL TIME.

Abba Eban (Hebrew: אבא אבן‎, born Aubrey Solomon Meir Eban 2 February 1915 - 17 November 2002) was an Israeli diplomat and politician.

In 1947, he was appointed as a liaison officer to the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine, where he was successful in attaining approval for the partition of Palestine into Jewish and Arab segments—Resolution 181. At this stage, he changed his name to the Hebrew word Abba (however it was seldom used informally), meaning "Father", as he could foresee himself as the father of the nation of Israel. Eban spent a decade at the United Nations, and also served as his country's ambassador to the United States at the same time. He was renowned for his oratorical skills. In the words of Henry Kissinger:

"I have never encountered anyone who matched his command of the English language. Sentences poured forth in mellifluous constructions complicated enough to test the listener’s intelligence and simultaneously leave him transfixed by the speaker’s virtuosity."

His polished presentation, grasp of history, and powerful speeches gave him authority in a United Nations that was generally skeptical of Israel or even hostile to it. He was fluent in ten languages.[2] In 1952, Eban was elected Vice President of the UN General Assembly.[3]

Eban left the United States in 1959 and returned to Israel, where he was elected to the Knesset (the Israeli parliament) as a member of Mapai. He served under David Ben-Gurion as Minister of Education and Culture from 1960 to 1963, then as deputy to Prime Minister Levi Eshkol until 1966. Through this entire period (1959–1966), he also served as president of the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot.

From 1966 to 1974, Eban served as Israel's foreign minister, defending the country's reputation after the Six-Day War. Nonetheless, he was a strong supporter of giving away the territories occupied in the war in exchange for peace. He played an important part in the shaping of UN Security Council Resolution 242 in 1967 (as well as UN Security Council Resolution 338 in 1973). Among others high level contacts, Pope Paul VI received Foreign Minister Abba Eban in 1969. [4]

Eban was at times criticized for not voicing his opinions in Israel's internal debate. However, he was generally known to be on the "dovish" side of Israeli politics and was increasingly outspoken after leaving the cabinet. In 1977 and 1981 it was widely understood that Shimon Peres intended to name Eban Foreign Minister, had the Labor Party won those elections.

Eban was offered the chance to serve as Minister without Portfolio in the 1984 national unity government, but chose to serve instead as Chair of the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee from 1984 to 1988.

His comment that "Arabs never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity" (i.e., for peace) made after the Geneva peace talks in December 1973, is often quoted.[5]
