QUOTE:

A family in Georgia said this week that a police officer should never have killed 17-year-old Christopher Roupe because he was only holding a video game controller, not a gun as authorities have claimed.

According to WSB-TV, Roupe had been shot to death on Friday when Euharlee officers showed up at his home to serve a probation violation warrant on his father. The officer later told state investigators that she was forced to shoot because Roupe had pointed at gun at her when he opened the door.

But Roupe’s family and witnesses who were at the scene said that the officer’s statement was just not true.

Attorney Cole Law, who is representing the family, told WSB-TV that the boy was holding a Wii video game controller because he was getting ready to watch a movie.

“It just doesn’t add up,” Law observed. “We don’t know where that statement came from. The eyewitnesses on the scene clearly state that he had a Wii controller in his hand. He heard a knock at the door. He asked who it was, there was no response so he opened the door and upon opening the door he was immediately shot in the chest.”

Neighbor Tia Howard showed up after the shooting. She was also told that “there was a Wii remote in his hand and [the officer] shot him.”

Neighbor Ken Yates said that he saw the officer just after the Roupe was killed, and she appeared devastated.

“This is tragic,” Yates recalled. “She came out of this house. She put her head in her hands and she was sobbing. Supposedly, he opened the door with a BB gun and in my opinion I think he was playing a game with his neighborhood buddies.”

The Euharlee Police Department followed standard procedure and put the officer on administrative leave following the shooting. Evidence from the autopsy was being turned over to the Cherokee Judicial Circuit District Attorney.

Roupe was an ROTC student at Woodland High School. His family said that he had planned to join the Marines. A funeral was scheduled for Friday.

The law firm representing Roupe’s family told Raw Story that it was too early to make a decision about a lawsuit.

Dang, that sucks all around. Sounds like a terrible mistake that the guy got killed, and now the PD is trying to cover it's butt with a BS lie about a gun. Of course I haven't seen the details, and we all know the media is full of crap when reporting stories (see Martin, Trayvon), so take it with a giant boulder of salt.

Umm, there either was a gun or there wasn't. Did the police recover a gun from the boy at the scene of the shooting or not? Unless the police planted evidence, I can't really see there being any ambiguity here.

Or perhaps the LEO 'thought' she saw a gun, which apparently is OK for shooting kids in Florida, but maybe not Georgia.

If you read some of the other threads here, whether there was or wasn't a gun is irrelevant. She thought it was a gun. Good enough for the "self defense" gun nuts here.

If parents would teach their kids to respect law enforcement and not open the door with wii otes this kind of thing wouldn't happen.

But seriously I doubt the dumb pig even loses her job over this.

Maybe the LEO closed her eyes long enough for someone to pick up the gun, run out to the nearest parking lot, and throw it in a dumpster. I sure hope they searched the surround five square miles for this kid's gun because, hey, you never know.

/sad we have to live in a world like this

The kid could have been a gun nut just itching to kill a perceived "intruder" in "self defense." Cop was just defending herself. That's where NRA rules get you, shoot first, ask questions later.

Was there loud rap music coming from the house? If so that could've been why the LEO had her weapon drawn.

My thoughts are with the Roupe family.

It sucks but nowadays it's pretty dangerous to open your door to a LEO.

So you're saying we should ban the police from having guns?

we need to seriously look at how cops use their weapons.

Why was her weapon drawn? If this was a probation violation, does that really call for armed entry? If her weapon wasn't drawn before the teen opened the door, how much time lapsed for her to see a "gun",unholster, decide it was pointed at her, decide the teen was going to fire, aim, then shoot?

There is something wrong with the police. They continue to escalate situations and its almost as if they are happy they get to pull their gun. Report of a guy with a knife? Lets break out the M4's. See something out of the corner of your eye that almost looks like a gun? SHOOT!

These are human lives we are dealing with. They are supposed to be the most precious thing on the planet. But people and police continue to ignore that. I don't know why they do, I just know they do.

In the cop's defense, those things can be Wiilly, Wiilly dangerous.

Next step in the escalating crazy is the door mat land mine, guaranteed to protect you from lunatic cops or pranking vandals.

A probation violation, or failure to appear serving doesn't usually require a gun *drawn* when knocking at the door. OOPS, slipsies, silly me, that'll buff right out.

Neither of these are eyewitnesses, though.

No, if you live in the Wild West type of society, everyone should have guns and shoot first, ask questions later.

We're not talking about a citizen. We're talking about a cop. Unless you're going to claim that cops shouldn't be allowed to have guns either, the NRA and any of the other stupid things you want to make this about have nothing to do with it.

You honestly think this only happens in the south?

The last couple stories like this have been in Arkansas and Florida (or was it Georgia?). Anyway, I don't feel like getting my face blown off by some twitchy paranoid lunatic while selling coupon books with my daughter for her Girl Scout troop
