As some of you may know, I am runner and run track for my high school. Being a senior, and thus ending my high school running career with this season, I really wanted to do well in track. Last year I ran a mile in 5:23, which while not bad, is certainly nothing very spectacular either. So I made my goal this year to run a mile in 5:10. I figured a 13 second decrease would be manageable by the end of the year if I worked hard.

Today was our first real track meet. We had a relay scrimmage a few weeks ago, but it didnt count and no one really kept track of times. So today, we went against a larger and much better team. Coach had me do the 1600 and 800, instead of my usual 1600 and 3200. Apparently he was counting on me to run well in the 1600, and didnt want me to die out in the 2 mile later.

Well, halfway through the third lap, I was about 50 meters behind a guy from the opposing team. Coach saw me and yelled for me to "get angry" and catch him. Now if theres one thing that can motivate me, its a challenge like that. So with 600 meters left, I went into an all-out sprint. I quickly was up beside the guy (no mean feat) and with 100 meters left, blew by him and finished in 6th place with a time of 5:09.

Looks like its time to set a new goal. With a full 14 second drop of my mile time, in my first meet of the year, I should definitely be able to run a sub-5 mile by the end of the season. So wish me luck!!

Congratulations.

I wish I had the determination to become a distance runner. :(

Best I ever timed myself at was a 6:00 mile (this was last quarter). I'm sure if I got in shape I could get below a six. But I'm a little out of shape now since I quit competitive soccer and only play it recreationally now.

Good job.

Looks like you'll have to wait a few more days... I ran a 5:17 today... Ugg!

I was the last leg od the Distance Medley Relay, and when I was tagged, we were in fourth place. I quickly overtook the third place runner, but the other two were just too far ahead for me to catch. So, I was running alone, and just couldn't force myself to push the extra 10% without someone to fight against.

Hopefully this Wednesday I'll run my 4:55.

My best mile was 5:12 in junior year. I was estimated to be at around 4:40+ my senior year. Cross-country = fall, track = spring. That fall during a cross-country meet, I broke my ankle. I was out for many weeks and I just didn't feel like training so hard just to get where I already was. I sat out the next track season.

Dapunisher: the first place finisher had a time of 4:40-ish. Then there were two guys around 4:50, and couple around 5 flat.

Whats too bad is that our star siatnce runner (whose goal this year was a 4:30) injured his knee and needs surgery next week. :( However, this also means that if I can improve my times by just a few seconds, I could concievably be leading the pack in the mile race soon. In practice I've already been second only to him.

I'm disappointed in my race today though. I was real intent on running under 5, only to have to run by myself and run 17 seconds slower than I wanted. But, as I said, that just means I'll have to do that this Wednesday.
