Sounds like you are adding too much water. Some people will disagree, but IMHO you just want a dash per jigger or scotch. If I have 1.5 oz of cask strength scotch, I want maybe 1/4 an oz of water.

I like my whisky 80-90 proof. If I'm going to a festival, I'll sometimes take it down to 60-70, but I don't like it as well. Cask strength whisky can be thought of as whisky concentrate, and when you see the sometimes high prices, you can calculate accordingly.

Not in every state. They certainly don't at my local one in Texas.

We've only got the one government run liquor store. They do sell wine at some grocery stores. There's one independent liquor store chain, which is allowed to sell beer only.

You all make me feel cheap for drinking Cutty & Soda - $21 + tax a handle.

My palate has not gotten adjusted to the 12-18yr old single malts yet.

For straight on the rocks, I still prefer a rye bourbon over scotch.

If they still have the Macallan 18 year under the Kirkland brand that's a great bottle of scotch too.

That's definitely the one I'd buy if I had the chance. Have yet to come across it, but I am hopeful since the Glenlivet 21 and Laphroaig 18 just popped up on the shelf this week.

Picked up the Nadurra. Whoa! had to tame a small pour with 10 grams of water.

The Laphroaig is nothing like Glenlivet, so you probably need to taste taste taste. I think Laphroaig is real smokey (also tastes of tar and leaves) and if you're only gonna have one bottle of Scotch, I don't think Laphroaig is the one for you.

My pick would be a 15 year old Glenfarclas. Still smokey, just not to the extent of the Laphroaig.
