I enjoyed reading this study. People are concerned about speeding and accidents that result from it. I especially find table 4-2 interesting when it asks what the speed limit should be. If you allowed people to rechoose what the speed limits were, they wouldn't be much higher than they are now. Just because people feel comfortable speeding doesn't mean they believe it's the right thing to do. They simply place their personal desires over the public good.

If we believe that breaking traffic laws were as serious as murders, then we would put more emphasis in stopping it entirely. We don't prosecute speeders because they did harm, but because of their potential for harm. That's not the same situation as any murder/robbery/violent crime... where we feel a duty to wipe out the crime if possible because every time it happens, someone is hurt. It's more of a regulatory thing where we expect some transgression of the laws, but simply want to keep the transgressions in check. To do that, random checking and ticketing serves it's purpose.

Those camera things suck.

My dad just got a speeding ticket with one. 109 bucks.

Guilty as charged though, they only click if you're 10 or more over the limit.

1) Slow down, the laws apply to you too
2) Learn where speed traps are and how to drive without attracting notice. Contrary to your belief that they're picking on you, that's pure garbage. You got snagged by attracting attention, either an abupt lane change, tail-gating or going NOTICABLY faster than everybody else around you. Almost nobody gets nailed for keeping up with traffic, that's the ticket excuse equivalent of "the dog ate my homework". Nobody is buying it.
3) Learn to deal with the tickets. If you speed and are not smart enough to blend in, you're going to get more of them

Exactly.

I take the NSP and at least 6 of us cars on the left lane blew by a hidden state cop at 70 mph. None of us was pulled over because we were part of a herd and i did it because there was a car behind me matching my speed. Learn to drive smart is the key, if you can't drive smart, follow the law. You are basically speeding to save an extra 5 minutes. I dont speed because I want to go somewhere FASTER, i speed because I get bored after a while.

Why is the speed limit 55 on an 8 lane freeway there? At least here in michigan they are pretty good about keeping most roads at 65 or 70. Only the back country roads are 55 or 60.

Fight your ticket, check out TicketAssassin and tie them up with discovery and other legal mumbo jumbo (make it up if you want). Most of the time, they are too busy or too uncaring to bother with your case.
