Yet another reason AOL is the devil

So I sign up for a free AOL trial at my local CompUSA because they were offering $10 store credit for signups, and you can cancel at anytime - no strings attached. As soon as I got home, I called the number and cancelled my account. A week later I get a letter in the mail from AOL thanking me for continuing the service and if this letter is a mistake and I really meant to cancel my account, to send it back to them with some information in the back.

Thinking the CSR I spoke to somehow screwed things up, I called the cancellation number again and cancelled my trial account _again_, and this time I got a cancellation number. So today I get another piece of mail from AOL thanking me for continuing the service and if this letter is a mistake and I really meant to cancel my account, to send it back to them with some information in the back. And then I notice the cancellation number I got from the second CSR is really my account number.

WTF???? So damn lame!!!! I'm just going to send the damn letter in but geez, you would think you could just cancel over the damn phone without hassles.

The only way to cancel with AOL is to close your bank account or change the # on your CC. Efax was charging my account and I couldn't get them to stop, so I went to the bak to ask for advice before I did anything. I explaned the situation, and the first thing they asked me is if it was AOL, because they have had to do it for quite a few people with AOL accounts.

You know what else sucks? They're blacklisting everyone's mailservers. Fscking pain in the ass aol. I have to call all my clients' who don't have in-house mail ISPs and request reverse DNS entries for AOL so that they can send mail to idiot contacts who use AOL.

I have a friend who had AOL for free for a couple years. He would get a free month, then when he called to cancel, they would offer him an extra month. After a while, though, he just got so fed up with them that it wasn't even worth having it for free. :Q

AOL is the devil! Well, they belong in hell anyway. Has anyone read the latest Rolling Stone magazine? They had an article about the guy who started Gnutella. It's nice to know that someone is a total pain in their arse because they are a pain in everyone else's.

i've signed up with aol 3 times in the last 3 months and cancelled easily and painless each time. (for the freevideogames.com credits) they try to keep you over the phone as everyone else does, but i've never heard of that letter thing... i just say i'm going abroad next semester and won't have computer access. they leave me alone.
