Hello all; thanks in advance for your help and hints.
Here's the story. I have a rig (old config is in my sig) that went through some hardware issues. I had to RMA the case, and RMA the e-VGA mobo for failure to power up.
I got a new case, but identical P-150 w/ the 430W NeoHE. But because the mobo is taking a while, and I need a new computer soon, I went out and purchased a DFI Lanparty SLI-D mobo and rebuilt the thing. Now... the computer powers up, goes through POST, and gets into the Windows XP launch screen... and then reboots.
Sometimes, it'll make it to the actual Windows XP start screen (where you select users). If I select a user, though, it will reboot. Other times, after a few reboot cycles like this, it will get into the actual Windows desktop and then reboot. I haven't actually gotten as far as running any programs on the box; just Windows XP and related things (like opening folders, etc.).
I can duplicate the behavior quite easily; simply boot up into Windows, and select a user. Chances are that the computer will reboot.
Nothing is overclocked yet on my system. I am using the stock heatsink and fan that came with the retail CPU.
So... in my reading, it appears that when computers do this, it could be the PSU, could be the heatsink, could be the memory, could be a short on the mobo, etc. etc. Well, prior to the hardware on my old rig dying, everything was working smoothly and was stable. The only component that has changed is the mobo, from the eVGA to the DFI.
The only other thing could be that when I RMA'ed the old mobo, I had to take the CPU off. So I took the heatsink off the CPU. I then scraped all the thermal goop, applied a fairly good sized smear of arctic silver 5, and reinstalled the heatsink.
What do you think is going on under the hood there? What would you try first to attempt a fix?
Thanks again for your help.
