Yet another radio station advocates violence against cyclists.

You guys may recall the Clear Channel asshat DJ who spent some time on-air encouraging violence against cyclists (story is about halfway down the linked page). Our very own 99X morning show DJ's pulled basically the same stunt this morning. One of them went on a long rant about how we're a hazard, should be on the sidewalk and all the other usual stuff and then was laughing about how he likes to get high and spend time running bikes off the road in one particular area of town.

One of my teammates called them up and pointed out how there have been several local cyclists killed in the past few years (including a good friend of mine) thanks to brain-dead or agressive drivers and the DJ's responded with "SO WHAT?!? WHO CARES ABOUT THEM?"

In a boldly hypocritical move, the station is going to be on-site for the final stage of the Tour de Georgia.

Sunday, April 25
Steve Craig @ Tour De Georgia (Lakeview Pkwy & Morrison Pkwy):
Join Steve Craig this Sunday Noon-3p for the grand FINALE of the Dodge Tour De Georgia. You can see 120 cyclists, including Lance Armstrong, finish this 6 day 653 mile race that supports the Georgia Cancer Coalition. Steve will be hanging out with the 99X crew at the corner of Lakeview Pkwy and Morrison Pkwy in the Met Life Parking Lot from Noon-3p. See ya there.

No story links yet since it just happened this am, but I'll keep you guys posted as things develop. The local cycling comminity is really pissed off about this.

PS- Let's skip the obligatory "Bikes should/shouldn't be on the road" flamewar if we could. This is about advocating violence toward a given group of people, which is just flat wrong regardless of your opinions of cyclists.

Update 4/26/04

[*]We've written several letters to the station as well as several phone conversations with them; their response so far has been pretty tepid.

[*]The Tour de GA told them not to bother showing up for their planned on-site broadcast from the final stage yesterday after we let them know what was up.

Tour sponsor Dodge pulled the plug on radio station 99X's planned live broadcast Sunday from the Healthy Georgia Expo. Listeners complained to Tour officials that on Friday morning's 99X show, the DJs advocated running cyclists off the road.

"They understood that it was in our mutual best interests if they did not attend," Dodge spokesman Randy Jones said.

I find this deeply amusing since there were an estimated 70,000 people attending the final stage. :D:D

[*]We now have an "in" with the big parent company (Susquehenna/Pfaltzgraf) who is going to take our "official" complaint (prepared by one of the attorneys on the team) and present them to the powers that be.

More updates as I find out more.

Update 5/18/04

Looks like all our calls and letter-writing got the attention of their parent company. :D

Letter from Pres/COO of Susquehenna Radio.

.pdf, sorry.

I certainly hope so. If Stern can get whacked for having a potty mouth, this guy should be bounced immediately. The station isn't CC, but they are part of a very large corp. that likely could do without the negative press.

We're going to do more than that, trust me. The guy who called in is working to get a transcript and will file complaints with the FCC, the station, and their parent company.

Thats poor.
We had a cyclist killed here last year .... On a winding road that runs along the Mississippi River mirroring the levee. He was riding with his buddies like they did every week and some one wasted him with their truck. Most people suck!:|

go figure. some folks are just asshats when it comes to cyclist.

Me personally I treat them like one is supposed to.

Like a car. If you pass one, pass when appropriate and in the other lane.

Most dont mean all cyclists. They dont refer to guys like your or serious cyclists who obey all the laws, and dont feel they should have the rights of a pedestrian, and a motorist. There have been just as many dumbass cyclists, as there have been dumbass agressive motorists.

Part of the reason that we're so pissed about this is that relations between cyclists and motorists in Atlanta already suck. We have tons of traffic, a good number of bikes, and everyone has to share narrow, windy roads with very few bike lanes. As you can guess, this breeds a lot of animosity on both sides. Factor in efforts to get cars off the road (to lessen gridlock and especially smog) being undermined by this kind of crap and the DJ's comments are even more irresponsible.

Stupid cyclists definitely inflame motorists more than guys like me, but they also have the effect of giving everyone on a bike a bad name so I get a fair amount of "trickle down rage". I've had people yell at me (often as a matter of fact) who are going the other direction or when I'm in a bike lane. WTF is that all about?

Cyclists think they can have the same rights as cars on the road, yet they don't follow the same rules as cars.

Cyclists are also slow, which cause lots of traffic problems. Cars will often times move way over into other lanes, just to get around a cyclist, so they don't accidentally hit them, when in reality, they are causing a larger hazard by swerving over.

Summed up... If you wanna ride a bike, do so on country roads, side walks, bike trails, or parks. NOT downtown at 5:01pm.

We're supposed to. You'll note I have never expressed empathy for morons who think or do otherwise.

Bike lanes would solve this and are very cheap. This is often as simple as restriping the roads.

Sidewalk riding is ILLEGAL if you are over 16 in most places. And yes, more cars on the road is good. Smog and fatness make the world go 'round.

PS- Big pat on the back to you for not actually bothering to read the first post. Good one.

And if that dosen't work... tire iron to the knees and then you and all your buddies can take turns running your bikes over him. That should give him an idea of what it feels like.

In most cities, it is illegal for cyclists to ride on sidewalks. Newer cities, and some older ones, now have added bike lanes. Which alot of dumbass motorists like to use for parking.

Theres dumbasses on both sides. The problem is the dumbass motorists cause death, the dumbass cyclists cause frustration.

We're going to make up some nice, big banners with quotes from the show and plant them around the 99X stuff on Sunday. That should be amusing. :D

No no no no no no. What you NEED to do is ask Lance for help. You KNOW he'd be willing if he got wind of it, and his voice behind it would guarantee these guys getting fired.

Well, I don't happen to personally know Lance but that would be nice. We're doing out best to get the word out as much as possible.

Forgot to mention, one of the US National under-23 riders got nailed by a car while competing in yesterday afternoon's time trial stage in the Tour de Georgia. Nice, huh? :frown:

Lewis stable after crash

Today's stage was marred by accident when 19 year old Craig Lewis of the US national under-23 team was hit by an SUV that had been driven on to the course.

Lewis sustained concussion and broken ribs in the crash, according to the race medical communiqué, and was taken to the Intensive Care Unit at Rome's Floyd Medical Center. A spokesperson for the Center told Cyclingnews that Lewis' condition was stable.

According to the Rome News-Tribune, police said the driver of the SUV, Edgar Bishop, 65, was trying to turn into the American Legion parking lot when he hit Lewis. Bishop was charged with failing to yield right of way.

But that would be advocating violence against radio jocks. :p
