This past Saturday I had the unfortunate experience of shopping at Best Buy. (Forgive me. I needed something right away and Target didn?t have it.)
As unpleasant as it was I did have the rather fortunate experience to return it the next day.
I was attended by an amazingly competent young lady at the service desk and managed to get out in record time. Before leaving I made note of her name and a solemn vow to do something nice in return.

This afternoon while taking care of my bills and other correspondence I noticed a box of thank you notes, (a gift from my mother many years ago). Courtesy being a forgotten art these days I decided to pull one out and use it. Wrote a little note inside briefly describing my experience and then thanking the young lady. I mailed it to the store manager just a few minutes ago.

I implore the good people at Anandtech to recognize some important things this holiday season.
- Christmas time is filled with a great deal of stress and even a certain amount of depression. These feelings are made even more poignant when one works in the retail industry.
- If you could go out of your way to write just one thank you note this year it would most definitely help make a persons life seem a little less bleak.

I never had the honor of working in customer service but I did spend nine years suffering in the US Navy. A simple Letter Of Appreciation can go a long way in improving self-esteem and morale. This is especially noticeable in the grunts at the bottom of the totem pole.

A standard size envelope and sheet of paper work fine, a proper Thank You card with fancy colors is even more meaningful. (And believe me, at this time of year you can find TONS of them in any store.)

Thanks for your time and now I?ll hop off the soapbox.

Wow, nice goin.

I work at Staples. We have a wall in the back that has all the thank you letters and everything. I gotta say, its kinda strange seeing the around a month difference in all the letters.

I also gotta say, not acting like a total jackass is worth more than a letter. Your definitely not going to be treated as well, and you might just get the guy helping you to snap (lets face it, were not getting THAT much).

I can still remember that one mom that acted like a total bitch. I remember because if I ever see her outside of work im gonna fuckin tear her a new one (verbally of course).

Well, thats nice but my point was....

You shouldnt be a dick any time of the year, for any reason. But that alone wont make people feel better. It just keeps from adding to their misery. True, acting mean might make him snap or at least make his day worse, but my suggestion was each of us should put in a little extra effort this year to help improve someones day.
Perhaps that one action could disperse the anger from 5 negative actions and prevent an irate employee from assaulting a stranger the next time he sees her after work.

I need to do this to American Airlines, pity I didn't get these two peoples names. Thanksgiving travel was kinda hectic for me: flight delayed on Tuesday, missed connection, later flight delayed as well, then weather in Dallas on Saturday so they routed me through Chicago just in case Dallas got worse. Communication was clear and prompt between the airline and me. On Tuesday, a real live human being called me to inform me that my flight was delayed, with a number to call if I needed assistance (I got my itinerary changed at the gate). Saturday, flying home, I walked up to the gate to check in and the gate agent immediately asked me where I was going, then suggested I go through Chicago instead, and he personally called the bag room, got my bags transferred, and got me a new itinerary right then and there. As a whole, I think American Airlines handled the Thanksgiving rush very well.

 American Airlines
