You've heard of all the classic practical jokes. Taking a screen shot of the desktop and making it the wallpaper, swapping the left/right mouse buttons, max'ing out the double-click speed, etc.

We came up with a new one...

We found an old donor mouse and took the mouse ball and rubbed it against a file to give it a flat spot. Then we put the altered mouse ball in H's mouse. H is not in today but when you move his mouse, the cursor moves then pauses then moves again. It is very random since it depends on when the flat spot gets to the bottom position. You can't really feel the irregularity in the mouse. It feels more like the mouse pad is a little dirty.

This will be great. Annoying enough to bother him but not very obvious.

Clear tape works well.

... and very obvious. We've done that already to another guy. Turn the mouse over and the joke is done. With the flat spot, it will go on for a while.

Putting a small piece of rubber band inside the mouse does wonders too. So does superglueing the mouse to the mousepad, putting clear tape on the phone (so he can't hear anything), sticking the receiver to the rest of the phone, hiding fish/yogurt/salad/somethingelsethatwillstinkafterawhile in or under his desk, putting a few drops of 5AM Reserve in his coffee while he's on the phone with a customer, putting a 3 minute hamsterdance composition on every single event in Windows, telling them Dr. Bear called (and letting them call back the local zoo, make sure it's a real person they get on the line though), get a friend to do a fake phonecall, compose a fake message 'from a customer', agree with a whole bunch of people to complement him on his new haircut, etc.

The flat spot was the size of a button. A normal size button on a dress shirt.

The other favorite here is to tape the receiver buttons on the phone so when it rings and the victim picks it up, it will still be ringing. By the time the victim peels off the tape, the voicemail system has kicked in.

We've left notes on people's desks to return a call from "A. Lyon" and leave the number to the zoo.
