How many of those republicans are retiring because they know they will lose the next primary election because they are RINO's?

I'd imagine that quite a few of them. In Central CA, there's a big shake-up with an interesting campaign technique: candidates are campaigning as "Conservative for [insert_position_here]" rather than claiming any particular party. It will be interesting to see how well it works for them.

I would very much like to see more true conservatives in government. Liberal Republicans are just as bad as liberal Democrats.

The guy is 71 years old, does it ever occur to anyone that he has more than worked in public service for 40 years, and might just be retiring because he wants too.

After all, he has won elections in good democratic years and bad. And even if some righty tighties think health care reform is the greatest disaster in the world, future generations will likely remember him as one of the fathers of a significant and needed reform. Plus one of the most effective congressmen in two generations. And to some extent, he is going out at the top of his game. Its his decision and I for one will not read anything into his retirement.

The sad thing is that there are 22 Senators older than him. And 39 representatives older than him.

David Obey is a tremendous Representative, if any of you are interested. You won't find any well respected conservative speak about him the way you are here.

He had a lot to do with getting the budget on track during the Clinton years, and consistently has warned against the excessive deficits.
