Dave Obey to retire?

IF true, it would be a HUGE blow to the D party but a big win for the USA and his district. Obey has been there too long and no longer stands for what the people of his district do - which can be said for a great many districts around this nation. 40 years? puhleeze - that's way too long and there is no way you could really be in touch with your district or voters.

House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey (D-Wisc.), a liberal lion first elected at the height of the Vietnam War in 1969, is set to announce Wednesday he will not seek re-election in November, according to a senior Democratic official. The move will deal a blow to Democratic chances of holding the northern Wisconsin seat.

Obey, 71, has called a meeting of his staff and issued a news release declaring a "major" announcement set for 1 p.m. on Capitol Hill. Obey, whose committee gavel gives him oversight of more than $1 trillion in annual federal spending, was facing his toughest re-election battle in years, as Ashland County District Attorney Sean Duffy (R) was running a promising campaign against him. The chairman's plan to retire was first reported by David Rogers of Politico.

Here is an interesting theory via politico
A senior Clinton administration figure and veteran of '94 made the case to me the other day that while some scrappy newcomers who knew how to fight competitive races had survived the 1994 bloodbath, its biggest victims were senior figures like Obey who grown tired of campaigning. That's a logic Obey seems to be buying.

Could explain the large number of old timers who all of a sudden decided that this was a good year to retire.

You have the first truly liberal president in decades and the largest majority your party has had in decades and yet you decide that now is a good time to retire?? Yea... right.

Retiring Democrats (17 incumbents) This has been updated and does include Obey.

Retiring Republicans (20 incumbents)

Also are you disputing the fact that D's are going to still be the majority?

Look a little deeper.

Democrats:
11 are truly retiring
6 are running for another office

Republicans:
8 are retiring
12 are running for another office

Since the Democrats have more seats I would call it about even when it comes to percentage of incumbents retiring.

LOL the old republicans are no better than the dems . These old boys had little chance for reelection . Than there is the behind closed doors meetings that took place secret laws passed. So that may be why their jumping ship they sold us out . Than again they may know dam full well that shits is happening and they are powerless to stop that which is unstopable.

I agree. I use to be against term limits but I think if they were crafted correctly could work well.

A few people even "retired" last time due to new lobby rules that would have affected them if they stayed. So it was clear why they were in DC to start.
