Yet another new system thread ($800 budget)

Hey guys,

I'm looking at getting a new system, and I have a budget of about $800.

I need almost everything, including monitor, although I have a mouse, keyboard, and I'll probably just use my headphones for sound.

So I need a:
Monitor (17 inch, probably)
Motherboard (onboard modem/lan/audio would be nice, but if not, I need those)
Processor (I figured on going AMD XP, and I'm not going to be overclocking)
HSF (if not a retail processor)
Hard Drive (around 40 gigs)
RAM (is 512 megs of DDR feasible?)
Video Card (not top of the line, but I play warcraft 3 right now, and I'd like to be able to at least play Doom 3 when it comes out (so that means an 8500 or a GF3?))
Case/Power Supply
DVD-ROM
Floppy Drive
Is there anything I'm forgetting?

I have Windows XP already.
Thanks for the help.

Do you need a cd burner? When I get some more time I will price together a system. I just built a whole system (no monitor) for about $900 that would meet your criteria, except it is an intel machine.

amish has the idea...I would if you have a bit to spare to the 800 mark go with the 2000+ xp...Also I would go with the retail Liteon 16x dvd-rom (one of the best)....

Look at the 40gb seagate....he only listed a 20gb and your spec was 40gb...

Thank you for all of your help.

Spac3d: I do not need a CD Burner. Since I got my nice Rio Riot, I will not need to burn or buy any CDs any time soon.

shabby: Thanks for the article. It proved to be a big help.

Electric Amish: Your system proved to be very nice, though the things I would probably change on it would be:
1.) Upgrade the speed of the Athlon XP
2.) Upgrade RAM
3.) 40 GB Hard drive
4.) I would get rid of keyboard, mouse, and most likely speakers (I already have my own).

Thanks for all of your help. If you have any more suggestions, please let me know!

Here are some replacements and the budget left:

CDRW -$57, Use Pioneer for CD Playback

CPU -$53, +$101 Athlon 2000+/266 OEM ($113 retail, $167: retail XP2200+)

Speakers - $22

Mouse: -$12

Keyboard: -$7

HD: -$67, $78 40GB Maxtor D740X

512MB RAM: $+61.99

$232 savings for omitted parts leaves you paying a net of $22.99 for the way you want it.
