I just received a letter from the FTC stating that I have the right to get my money back because of the settlement of a lawsuit.
It seems that a supplement that I use had made claims that it cured cancer and diabetes. I have never heard those claims and think it is a good product that I will probably continue to use.

Do I put put in the claim for my $300 back?

What happens to the money if it is not claimed by customers?

I gotta say, I'm torn on this one. If they made false claims, they should pay. Even if you didn't know about those claims or didn't take the product expecting that they were true, that's the risk the company took when it settled the suit. If you're legally entitled to take the money regardless, that's one thing.

On the other hand, if you weren't harmed in any way, you're not morally entitled to take their money. Maybe you could take it and give it to a good charity?

take the money as it is a class action suit. as sixone stated, if you don't feel comfortable taking it, then give it to the poor or war orphans.

If a product worked the way I expected it to and as it was advertised to me, I wouldn't feel entitled to get any of my money back.

I did end up as Lawful Good in Planescape: Torment though, so the goody two-shoes is strong in this one.

Legally, there is no problem. The company may have had false claim, or unsubstantiated by the FDA, but if it is a homeopathic remedy, chances are it may still have anti-cancer benefits, they just can't conclusively prove it to the FDA without declaring it a drug (which would invalidate it as a homeopathic remedy and put it under the claim of pharmecutical companies). :(

Sucky situation. BTW, I know a bit about this since my dad was a drug researcher and now he sells homeopathic medicine and herbs.

I would say if you want to take the money. Legally, it is alright. If you feel guilty about it though, stick with your gut feeling. You are the only one that really knows if it goes against your core beliefs.
