yet another mobo/cpu recommendation thread

i have a couple IDE 80 gig hard drives and will be adding other hard drives (maybe sata...depends if the mobo supports it...i know i know...no real world performance difference blah blah blah) and im looking to stuff em in a linux box running samba for a file server. anyone recommend a cheap/reliable (keyword: reliable) mobo and a cpu to go with it? note: it will only be used as a file server so the CPU doesnt need to be really anything fancy (semprons??), but i do want a nicer mobo for a low price. Possibly with wake on lan so i can make this baby...well...wake on lan.

If it were me and I was buying new I'd get an older model intel board like a 845PE or an 865/875. They probably would be pretty inexpensive solutions these days.

If you can shell out the bucks, the DFI 855GME-MGF motherboard plus a Pentium-M CPU would be a good choice. The motherboard has a PCI-X slot for a RAID card or whatever. The Pentium-M is a very low power CPU, too. Saves money on the electric bill - something to consider in a home server.

Otherwise, get a ASUS CT-479 plus a supported motherboard and a Pentium M.

whoaa...i was looking moreso for a 200 dollar max cpu & mobo combo. i know about the pentium M, have a 2.0 ghz (dothan) in me lappy, very nice, i think the only intel i approve of performance-wise. as far as low power that's why i want it to be wake on lan, so that i can turn it off when not needed and turn it on remotely over the LAN when needed.

Find an old PIII on eBay then...file serving doesn't require much CPU, especially if you aren't doing software RAID.
