Yet another Computer speaker thread (YACST)

Should I bother?

  • No - Just buy the z230

  • Yes - buy something that doesn't "probably" suck

No budget constraint.. But let's be sensible

Will be plugged into my Modded X-Fi (national semiconductors^_^) not as junk as it was. :D

My question is, should I even bother with this,
or just get the logitech z230 for $20 dollars.

Listed in order of amazon Price:

Klipsch Pro-media Ultra 2.0 - $60

Creative T20 - $90

M Audio Av 30 - $100

Logitech Z 2300 - $110

Creative T40 - $130

M Audio AV 40 - $150

Klipsch Pro-media 2.1 - $150

M Audio BX5a - $240

:sneaky:

Update:

Bought the Klipsch 2.1

After reading 100xxx reviews, It seems that there is only a consensus on the perception of sound; that without Special testing equipment, No one knows wtf they're talking about,

I don't think anyone writing these passionate reviews are even musically trained. At best they're EE engineers who seem to LOVE electronics more than sound itself. Otherwise they're just kids who can read a brochure.

I am actually angry that I even bothered to begin with....

Thanks to EVERYONE who chimed in.

Well I'm not sure what you mean by sensible since everyone's definition is different. In addition, you listed speakers 12 times apart in price, so I'm afraid I am confused. But you did say was no budget constraint, so I am going to be reasonable by my definition of reasonable.

I would say the NHT xD is probably the best integrated 2.1 "PC Speaker" setup ever made. It's listed here at $2k although you can field offers and see if he bites.

Ok bro, While I respect your perspective of "sensible."
Is that not even a little bit overkill for computer speakers?

Price is not a problem, but I haven't "matured" to an audiophile gear-head yet. :\

My Klipsch 5.1 Promedia set finally died after 6 years of near-constant use.
I upgraded to a pair of Adam A5s and an eD A3S-250, they should arrive soon.

A few questions to ask yourself:
What's your upper budget limit?
What are you using this for? % breakdown of HT/music/gaming
Do you want 2.1, 5.1, 2.0?
Is bass important to you?

Would you consider buying a cheap amplifier or receiver and pairing that with a set of bookshelves, or are you set on an "all in one" solution (powered computer speakers or possibly active studio monitors)?

Hmm seems you jumped over my op..

Goes straight to my LM4562 xfi "sound card"
2.1
Only music.
No Home-theater.
I couldn't care less about in game sounds. :\

No budget limit,, but I do have a moral limit, "sensible."

I don't want to buy anything with the speaker except the speakers.

Your actually wrong about that. It's not maturing into an audiophile--it's a case of Benjamin Button. Your hearing decreases sharply as you age. So if anything, you would be devolving from an audiophile.

Might as well enjoy sound while you can--otherwise you are just paying for pride of ownership when you are older and it will have very little to do with sound.

Are you sure this happens to everyone?? My father is a million years old, and he's like a BAT, but no cape. ^_^

But.. i digress.. back to speakers

Your ability to discern treble falls off like a rock. He probably still hears the midrange (vocals) very well. Can he still hear the ringing from a CRT?

does Swan still make the M200s? if yes get those if not get whatever they replaced them with

EDIT yes version 3 ~ $400 for the set

http://www.swanspeaker.com/product/htm/view.asp?id=401

Version 2s can be found for 250 ish

they are 2.0 speakers but have good bass

http://www.theaudioinsider.com/product_info.php/p/swan-m200mkiii/products_id/121

I've heard good things about Swan monitors, but I don't know a whole lot about them. I've also heard good things about M-Audio's powered monitors (AV40, specifically).

I haven't listened to either the M2s or 3s however u had a roommate with the originals and they were pretty amazing, they sounded better then my pro media 2.1s which were and still are well regarded comp speakers. great SQ and stage. bass was great for a 2.0 set. only downside to them is they are well quite large.

lol found this on google image search

AVS maybe but prob not. TBH if you are only going to listen to music id go with either the Swans i recommend or if you don't want to spend that much go with the M-audio AV40

i dont have personal experience with both but you will prob enjoy either.

i have owned the klipsch 2.1s and 4.1s. the Swans are better
