Yet another Atkins Diet Question

Is it ok to have breathmint or gum while on the Atkins or is there a special Atkins brand gum/mint I don't know about?

Get sugarfree gum/breath mints. Those breath strips work well.

It depends. Some people are very susceptible to sugar. When I was on Atkins, I ate 4-5 Altoids per day. I still was able to steadily lose weight. Just be sure to include those carbs in with your daily total.

I have a friend that will go completely out of ketosis if he would consume anything with sugar (he eventually went to the doctor and discovered he had a irregular thyroid).

Have you read his books? I've read all of them . . . I have a degree in Nutrition, a minor in Biochemistry, and an MD. Atkins' previous books are BS . . . that's why he was called a quack . . . because he was! His most recent book is a quantum leap from where he started. But much of the public understanding of what a healthy, sustainable diet entails remains quite impoverished. Even the Atkins people are claiming the media has distorted his message. In its current iteration, Atkins is recommending a diet with moderate protein (primarily from lowfat sources), moderate fat (primarily mono and polyunsaturated), and low-moderate carbohydrates (almost exclusively in the form of complex/whole foods). Not only is that diet healthy . . . it's easily sustainable b/c it allows the selection of diverse foods. If your diet REQUIRES a vitamin supplement . . . it is by its own definition unhealthy and unsustainable!
