Have you read his books? I've read all of them . . . I have a degree in Nutrition, a minor in Biochemistry, and an MD. Atkins' previous books are BS . . . that's why he was called a quack . . . because he was! His most recent book is a quantum leap from where he started. But much of the public understanding of what a healthy, sustainable diet entails remains quite impoverished. Even the Atkins people are claiming the media has distorted his message. In its current iteration, Atkins is recommending a diet with moderate protein (primarily from lowfat sources), moderate fat (primarily mono and polyunsaturated), and low-moderate carbohydrates (almost exclusively in the form of complex/whole foods). Not only is that diet healthy . . . it's easily sustainable b/c it allows the selection of diverse foods. If your diet REQUIRES a
vitamin supplement . . . it is by its own definition unhealthy and unsustainable!
Surprise, surprise
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People who consume plenty of whole-grain foods, particularly fiber-rich cereals, may be less likely to develop health conditions that put them at increased risk of diabetes, new research suggests.
Atkins #3
Our Basic #3 Formula is one of the most comprehensive vitamin, mineral, herbal and antioxidant supplements specifically designed to support controlled-carb weight loss. Three tablets a day provide the nutrient support you need while losing weight sensibly and safely. Basic #3 includes 34 key ingredients to help combat any nutritional shortfalls your body might experience during weight loss.
Straight from the horses mouth.
Since many of us come to the controlled-carb Atkins? plan from a high-carb/low-fat diet, our metabolisms have to undergo some adjustments. The first place dieters feel the difference is in blood sugar levels. Basic #3 contains two key vita-nutrients, vanadium and chromium, to help maintain blood sugar levels, a key goal in controlled-carb weight loss.
BS and BS . . .
supplemental vanadium and chromium have long been tossed on the dung heap of discredited methods of controlling serum glucose levels . . . except in
some persons with significant deficiencies in either mineral.
The formula also contains B-complex vitamins to spark the energy pathways of the body.
Nope, only works if you are deficient . . . try whole grains, legumes, eggs, milk, and a touch of beef and you will have all the B-vitamins you need. The exception would be children, pregnant women, and athletes . . . none of which need Atkins anyway.
And, since weight loss releases free radicals into your system, Basic #3 contains increased levels of natural antioxidants from plant sources such as green tea and grapeseed which neutralize these dangerous free radicals.
A diet rich in antioxidants . . . whole foods (fruits and veggies) is all you need. The primary exceptions would be significant sources of non-diet related oxidative stress (eg smoking, competitive athlete). Granted, you should just stop smoking but the athlete almost always has a higher micronutrient requirement. Yet a well-executed diet is almost always superior to a pill or capsule.
