My sister in law gets an iPod Touch (EDIT: 2nd Gen it turns out) and she showed it to my wife yesterday at lunch. After we had dinner, my wife bought an 8GB one from Best Buy.

I then proceed to install software and updates and shit so some 2 hours later I figure I am done. I disconnect the usb cable, plug in the headphones and try to play music.

The score sounds correct but the vocal is all garbled up and sounded distant. First thing that comes to my mind is DRM. So I pull out a CD and rip it from iTunes and dump that on the iPod. Same shit. This is now 1 am so I said fuck it, I'll try next day.

Today, after 3 hours of reinstalling, restoring, what have you nots, nothing, same shit. I googled and a probably cause is a defective jack. So I tried plugging the headphone in half way. Lo and behold it sounds more or less what it should sound like, except mono. Plug it in fully and it's all fucked again.

Needless to say I will be exchanging this at the store.

edited for typo

This thread sucks. You got a defective unit but you blame Apple, iTunes, the world?

I was forced to play with iTunes, which I absolutely detest.

Just Apple, not the world.

uhm....what? He complained about iTunes because he doesn't like it and the iPod forces you to use it. He complained about Apple because they built a defective unit. You do realize that that is Apple's fault, right?

I know how you feel OP. I have an iPhone and a couple of Macs but today I just wanted to add ONE song to my iPhone. Just one song should only take a few seconds right? Why iTunes has to sync your entire library including apps and everything else BEFORE you can sync your music is beyond me. Oh and if you don't want it to sync something, it removes it from your device. I have to be using it wrong, right? They wouldn't code software to be that annoying on purpose would they?

Maybe I'm in the wrong because I don't sync my phone every 30 minutes but why should I have to? There really needs to be a quick sync feature IMO. Don't get me wrong, the iPhone is great and I like it a lot but iTunes drives me insane.

Why don't you uncheck the option of automatically syncing your iphone when connected to your computer? Then you can manually drag and drop individual songs to your iphone.

Itunes is permanently set like that on my Mac but I'll verify it again after work. To be honest I've never really liked iTunes but I do like the iPhone so I'm stuck unfortunately.

Yeah, one bad unit slipping out is Apple's fault. It's not like that's a systemic issue with iPods. Maybe it's the place he bought it froms fault?

Edit: Fixing
tags because this forum's software sucks.

Ok - Apple failingly attempst to force you to use iTunes  And yes - a defective unit is Apple's fault. Does it happen with everyone? Of course, but its still Apple's fault in this case (unless the unit was broken by the store, yes, but come on...a bad headphone jack, being the fault of the store? Get real). If you disagree, you're just a fanboy that's lying to yourself. omgz Apple can't do wrong!!!!

I always have to remind myself that iTunes sort of blows on Windows, because on OS X (especially in 10.6) it is actually pretty decent, stays quick, easy to use, looks solid.

But yea, iTunes on Windows is pretty annoying so I can definitely feel for you on that front, but you might want to try exchanging the iPod Touch first, before just getting your money back, give it another shot, it is a fancy little device.

Or maybe check out the ZuneHD, I hear that the browser is close the to Touch's, but everything else is really solid. Of course, you won't have the App store, but I have no idea how much of a draw that might be for you.

Oh I exchanged it alright. This one works as it should. I have washed my hand of the loading part so I don't need to worry about that now... At least for the next 10 minutes anyway.

I know after 10 min of using iTune she will think "Screw this, have my husband deal with it"

I have plenty to bitch about Zune, but I am talking about iPod/iTune in this thread.

I know that you are talking about iPod/iTunes... but I was merely offering an alternative to iPod/iTunes if you wanted to go that route.

Good to know that at least the replacement Touch doesn't have the same problems.

I find it ludicrous for a mp3 player to leave a factory with a defective audio jack. I guess they either don't test it or do not use mini jack plugs to test, rather just a lead with contacts.

Hopefully this one lasts.

Manup!:frown:

Tell the wife you can't be bothered, make her learn to use iTunes.

Slap her in the ass and walk away;)
