What would you go for a 4400+ X2 or an Intel 940. I ask because they are the same price here. I usually use this CPU comparison chart from Tomshardware.com. But they do not have anything about the 940's yet. I am trying to build a new gaming rig.

What else would you consider for this same price.

for gaming i'd probably say to get the 4400+.

the 940s are still pretty fast but they arent gonna beat the 4400 i dont think.

if you are strictly gaming you probaly can get an fx55 or something and it might be better. honestly i'd just save the money and get a few steps lower, and get say dual video cards (uless you already were planning to do that)

I guess it also depends on if you had a motherboard picked and/or what features you need/want on said motherboard. Though I suppose that doesn't really matter, comparable motherboards exist for both platforms. AFAIK the 4400+ would be a better choice.

Also, as far as OCing, I'd rather have 2.2GHz guaranteed if I had the money than maybe 2.6GHz. Granted, you can OC to those levels, but there is no guarantee. As I said, if I had the budget, I'd get the fastest possible and OC that. If I had a smaller budget, it'd be different. (I had the smaller budget, but I also don't OC anyhow, my 165 is stock).

I'd go with the X2 4400+.

Either will do well for you though.

Also noticeably, in lanparties 90% of the gamers has AMD onboard.

There is only one thing i regret about buying amd cpus, and that is heat, my old second rig with a celeron d sure made a good leg warmer.
I'm being serious here.

Anyways go for the X2, it should overclock well and will be much better than a intel 940 when it come to games.

LOL I dont know if anyone has not been able to get there Opty 165 over 2.2. If so I would like to see it.

Why would you get the fastest possible and overclock that? Thats just a waste of money. IF you dont overclock or have experience overclocking please dont be giving advice on overclocking. They are all basically the same chip with different multipliers.

To answer the original question.....Go with an x2 or an Opty. If you want to overclock get a 3800 or a 165. If not then get whatever you feel gives you the best value for performance.

1) turn off CnQ
2) raise vcore needlessly
3) buy thicker socks

problem solved:p

I was actually looking at getting the ASUS A8N-32 SLI, from what I hear it is a great board all around. The only reason I was looking at the 940 was because of the 4MB cache. I had a prescott for quite some time and it was ok after some initial issues.

Anyway I was wondering if someone can give me some advice on how to decide what to base a system on. I was always decided what kind of system I am building by first picking my motherboard. Someone told me I should decide on CPU first. What do you think? What is the first part that you pick out?

1) it is off
2) cant mainboard voltage regulators overheat, still need to use the comp
3) but having a nice warm foot rest is so much better than socks.

:p

alright, well then run a DC project; the load power consumptions are much closer than idle are they not?

Well, I always start with what I have and make a list of what I want to keep, that usually picks the platform for me.

Then I look at what technologies my system currently supports and what it doesn't, and decide what I want to have.

Forcast where my computing needs might be in the next 12 months.

Never buy the best of anything, as it will become cheeper eventually, and harder to sell off when finished with it.

Identify the biggest bottlenecks in my current system.

Never upgrade the whole system at once, as that's rarely necessary and hugely expensive, and scares you next time you think of rebuilding.

Pick a modestly satisfying benchmark target and aim for it. All the modern platforms are plenty fast enough to base a solid PC around.

It is a good board, i've got it. However it's a very bad choice in terms of value for money. What parts get recomended vary based upon budget, intended use, overclocking or not and planned upgrade paths.

If you head over to the general hardware forum and stick your planned budgt in the search bar and you'll find a few builds that would be worth a look.
