Yet another AK35 question: onboard sound mic input - volume really low

The mic input seems to be really weak, even with the Microphone Boost enabled in the mixer. It's only audible with the boost on, and there's pretty much nothing without the boost. I have to shout into the mic in order for it to playback recognizable speech. With my Aureal sound card before this, the mic would give loud playback at 50% volume without the boost.
Is there some sort of tweak for this, or do I need a little external hardware signal amplifier?
