Yet Another 8800GT vs 9600GT thread

Hey Guys n' Girls out there! i need your help, i'm thinking of updating my graphic card and these are 3 volunteers which i saw:

MSI GF 9600 GT PCI-E 1GB DDR3 OVERCLOCKED

MSI GF 8800 GT PCI-E 512MB GDDR-3 OVERCLOCKED

PALIT GF 8800 GT PCI-E 512MB GDDR-3 HDMI SONIC

so which card is better in performance? and what influence has bigger memory slots to performance? your comments on these cards are welcome
P.S. the 8800 price is nearly the same, tho 9600 is a bit cheaper.

8800GT if your looking to invest in the card for alot longer. Maybe 2 or 3years. The 8800GT clearly has more shader and texturing power compared to the 9600GT. Its basically 10~20% faster overall. I guess an OCed 9600GT can catch up but you can OC the 8800GT too.

So its up to you. 8800GT for performance and more money or 9600GT for 80~90% of 8800GT performance and less money.

The extra memory on 9600 GT doesn't do nothing for performace , I mean nothing at all. Maybe somewhere over 1920X1200 resolution you will get a couple of fps extra then on a vanilla 9600 gt, but it will still be slower then the 8800 GT.

Like Cookie Monster said, the 512 mb 8800 GT is a better card, having more shader power then the 9600 GT, and it will do better in the next games that are about to be launched. It really depends on your budget, but even if you choose to get a 9600GT, take the 512 mb version since the 1 gb card doesn't worth at all the extra dollars.

If you wanted though down the road you could SLI the 9600gt. Apparently they scale very well compared to 8 series cards. 9600gts also have Purevideo 2 and slightly less power requirements.

The 8800gt will be the best choice. As stated already, the extra memory comes in more at high resolutions using high levels of aa and af. And as for cooling, the stock cooler should be fine. You can get much better coolers, but be warned. Replacing a heatsink on a video card is not as easy as replacing the hs on your cpu. In fact, sometimes it can be a pain in the rear. So I would say if you are not comfortable ripping into your system, don't get an aftermarket cooler. Just get the cheapest out the 3 its simple, because when the 9600GT starts struggling to play games so will the 8800GT.

Well, since i have no experience in GPU cooling, so i better won't touch it, so i'll stick with Stock, but what about that temperature? won't it effect my system? won't it burn or something? is it safe?

i'm not sure what you mean, but they wouldn't use the stock stuff if it was going to kill your card...

I recently decided to upgrade from 7600gt to 9600gt. My setup is e6600, vista ultimate, 24" gateway lcd.

1. xfx 9600gt is $40 less than xfx 8800gt.
2. I play wic @ 1600 so the 9600gt performance is more than adequate at that res.
3. 9600gt less heat and power (less cost to operate) I tend to have my pc on 24/7.

If I remember correctly this has a very nice aftermarket cooler in place of the rather mediocre stock 8800GT cooler.

8800 or 9600 ... the first name is the family lol 9xxx or 8xxx is like the generation....

the second number is the quality of the card ... x8xx or x6xx 8 > 6 this means that 8800 is better than 9600 lol

Just messing but in reality I hear the 9600 is very budget like and not that fast at all...

well obviously you heard wrong then. maybe you should do some research for posting such things. the 9600gt is only about 10-15% slower than the 8800gt but in some cases it can be just as fast. in other case the 8800gt wins by a good margin. the 9600gt is great for a midrange card it is twice the speed of the old mid range 8600gt.

Uhh, one more question, i read that Zalman has good cooler, and some are OC'ed too,
so does extra ~20$ worth that features which zalman edition has, or it's not?

Hey guys im in such a doubt now..i selected a 9600Gt and overclocked 8800GT...dont know which one to go.max resolution i will use is 1280x1024...with settings high if possible with AA and all.else in the next low setting.which one to go for?

I believe both cards do better in higher resolution... either will be sufficient. get the cheapest one...

get the 8800gt and forget about it. It's faster overall and more shaders. For 139.99 AR it's a great deal

Newegg has the MSI 9600GT open box for 119.00 right now. At 1280x1024, you can max everything out on any game and still have great framerates. Ge the cheapest card you can. BTW Tech Report did a performance/dollar comparison and the 9600 GT wins every time. In sli, it crushes anything even close to it in price. Plus less power/heat. Great card.
