Yet another 680i temp question...

Here are my specs:

E6600 @ 3Ghz stock voltage
Zalman 9500AT
eVga 680i
Corsair 2GB 6400C4D
Segate 320gb
Antec P180

My question is at this speed my temps with TAT are 40-42 at idle and 64-66 at full load. Does this seem a tad high to anyone? I wanted to see if i could push it to 3.4 maybe but if its hitting high 60's already maybe I should just call it a day. I used the thermal paste that came with the heatsink and put a strip down the middle of the chip (heard from a friend that was the way to go per the Arctic Silver 5 instructions). Thanks.

Welcome to anandtech. TAT will make your processor hotter than any other software. See what temps it runs while running Orthos. And you'll have to turn your Zalman's fan all the way up, to go above 3 Ghz, and still be cool.

Well I have the same board and CPU but use the Tunic tower. Anyhow my e6600 is running at 3400Mhz (at 1.44 V) or there-abouts and idles at around 33-35c and kicks to around 45 or so during Orthos for say like 45 min. If I use TAT it raises considerably.

As Myocardia said, if you run TAT it will stress your CPU like no other app on this planet making it run far higher in temp then you would normally ever see. You can try to remove the thermal paste and re-apply it to see if it changes the temps. Maybe add a bit more or thin it out more evenly and see if it makes a difference. Honestly you would be amazed at the difference in temperature that a properly applied thermal paste makes.

680i reads temperatures really low. Both my EVGA and Asus board did this. I would idle in bios on air with temperatures of 17 when my room is 24.

oh yes for sure -- its readings are messed. I use CoreTemp for this exclusively.

But, he said he'd already applied it correctly (the new way they recommend for C2D's). My guess is that he had the Zalman's fan turned all the way down.
