Yesterday my first baby was finally born

The baby is finally out, and only a week overdue.

After 8 hours of contractions the baby wouldn't go any further so we ended up with a C-Section. We thought about continuing another day but after thinking about what was best for the baby we didn't think it was worth it.

Anyway here are the details.

The ultra sound was a little off on the size basically due to how long he is, he looked bigger on film than he really was.

Baby and mother are both in recovery and doing fairly well. Some minor issues with Lyle but nothing life threatening. I have a picture or two but am too tired to try posting them anywhere right now.

Ok, so it is now the tomorrow morning I was referring too. We are getting ready to head to the hospital to get things started. I hope everyone has a good day and I will update later as to the outcome.

Tomorrow morning at 6am we take my wife in to be induced into labor via Pitocin IV. Not my ideal situation but she is a week overdue and the baby is fairly large, so we don't have a whole lot of time to play around with. I would hate to wait and force a c-section due to the baby's size.

We are looking at the little boy that is just under 10 pounds at this point (a little smaller than I was when I was born). I know that my mother was induced with me and it turned out fine. Seems the baby takes after me according to the doctor, I quote:

"The baby is long, big, comfortable, and stubborn"

Does anyone have any experience with being induced or having their wife/gf induced? Just wondering what to expect and I can only read so many articles and faqs, I want real experience from a community I trust.

Thanks for any info or suggestions.

Why no C-section? The recovery is somewhat longer, but the birth itself is pretty damn quick. Certainly seems like an option to pushing out a huge kid IMHO.

C-Section is definately an option if it comes down to it, however my wife doesn't like being cut open. I can't say I blame her, just seems like something to be avoided if possible.

Don't even worry about anything! All three of my children were induced with Pitocin. BUT NEVER LET THEM GIVE HER NUBAIN! I'll explain if you want. Go for the epidural - don't let her try going without, expecially at 10 lbs!

9 and a half is doable and some women don't want a long a$$ scar.

Inducing labor is no big deal. The drugs just speed up the inevitable.
 
My wife was induced. The doc started with Cytotack which is much more stronger than pitocin i believe, and then once she was dialated to a 4 they started on the pitocin. Just hang in there with her, being induced can either be a long process or a quick process. Be there for your wife...she'll need you

My wife had the same expierence. She was over due by 10 days, and they induced here with some drug...can't remember which one off hand.

Everything went fine, however she acted like the devil for a few hours towards me 🙂

 
She is 99% sure on the epidural, I think that it will be 100% after a hour or so of contractions.

I will take your advice on the Nubain. Thanks for that tip.

Our daughter was C-section as she was breech and they couldn't get her to turn (they tried). It took a while for my wife to feel normal again since it is major surgery, but overall (according to her) it wasn't all that big a deal.

Again, just seems like an idea to be considered in light of how long/miserable your wife's labor/delivery is probably going to be (this is her first, right?).

 
my wife went into labor the night before she was supposed to be induced.

after 24 hours of labor, including 2 hours of pushing, she ended up needing a c-section due an obstructing bone in her birth canal.

at one point they gave her pitocin to speed the labor along and make the contractions more regular. that was after the epidural.

is there anything in particular that worries you?
 
Go to bed early. My wife was induced on her first pregnancy. Labor will be much longer. Hers was about 12 hours.

 
Don't let her do it without an epidural! Typically induced labors tend to be long with irregular contractions. My wife has had both a C-section and an induced VBAC (vaginal birth after cesserian) and to her her tell it, she would rather go through the c-section again. She was up and feeling good after the surgery within three days and only took motrin for about a week to help the pain.

Just looking for experiences, the more I know the more I can help out and control.

I am big on knowing as much as I can on anything I am involved in. Better to know too much than not enough.

I'm not sure what advice to give...my wife was induced with my daughter and hard labor lasted about 4 hours before she was born. On the flip side, I have a friend's wife who was induced and she still had a long labor.
In other words, induction doesn't necessarily mean a fast birth nor a slow one. Just that it will help to get things moving along 🙂
Also, as Fausto mentioned, there isn't anything inherently bad about a c-section other than maybe being a little less tramatic on the baby....from what I have heard.

My last baby was also induced, and the woman had an epidural. This was at about 7:30-8AM.
She literally CRIED because she was so bored later in the day. And took a couple naps. The real pushing and suchlike started at about 3-4, and by 4:12 we had a little girl.

my wife's scar is barely noticeable. it is below the panty line and about 3 inches long(horizontal).

mind you, i am not arguing that this is a reason to get one. imo, you should do everything you can to avoid it.

Pros: Faster, baby doesn't come out squished-looking. 😛

Cons: recovery is longer, mom can't do jack the first week or so (ie- dad does everything but breast feed). You'll get to change the first few diapers....which is...um...exciting.
 
Here is how the family history of baby size breaks out.

Me: 10 lb
My Brother: 9 lb 8 oz
Wife: 9 lb 3 oz
Wife's Brother: 9 lb 6 oz

NONE of the siblings would be considered small by any means, baby is currently closer to me in size (weight, lenght) than any of the other 3 in the 2 families.

wife was to be induced last January. We were to go in around 6AM. Her water broke @ 1AM...we get to the hospital and after a while they put her on the Pit to get things moving. Little dartworth wasn't coming out so about 18 hours later they performed a c-section.

Everything worked out...it was just so hard to see my wife being put through that. She was exhausted.
