Letter from a literary agent . . .

Dear Mr. Humphreys:

I have reviewed your work titled ?Spectre? and have reached a positive evaluation of the property. I feel this property could have great market appeal and if you choose, I would like to market this book for you.

Therefore, enclosed you will find my Agency Agreement to represent this property. The contract provides a 15 % commission on all gross proceeds earned from publisher?s advances and all royalty payments from the sale, lease or license of the work. Any foreign gross proceeds earned from publisher?s advances and all royalty payments from sale, lease or license of the work will require a 20% commission.

BOO-YAA!

I'll take one! Only if it's autographed though 😉

Only if you BUY one. I have a sneaking suspicion that if I offered free autographed copies in the hot deals forum I would have 90,000 new best friends. 😉 😛

I'll be your agent for only 10% commission...

😉

Seriously, good job! Now all you need is a publisher. Hope that agent doesn't take you for a ride...

Outstanding! A lot of people talk about writing a book, but not very many have the discipline to do it. And only a fraction of those can get an agent interested in representing them.

Congratulations!

Congrats.

Question: What exactly is "gross proceeds"? Is that the price the book sells for or is that the profit after publishing, distribution and advertising costs?

You may want to have an attorney read over the contract before you sign it.

Again, congrats and good luck.

Gross proceeds are the latter, from what I hear, 3-4 bucks for a hardback, and 1-2 for a paperback. However, you don't get any royalties until the advance has been covered by proceeds.

One of my customers is an attorney specializing in contract law. The last time I worked on his machine we were discussing the possibility of me getting an agent, and he asked to look at the contract as he's never seen one before and would like to see what it's like.

You're telling me . . . there have been times when I've been just flat-out sick of looking at this book, I've edited, rewritten, and basically polished it so much. The actual writing of it didn't take that long; about 9 months IIRC.

SWEET!

Good job!

Thats what I got a computer for in the first place, to write MY book. (then I ended up HERE!! And gaming, can't forget gaming...) I did get 7 chapters done though before I got "Side Tracked"
